Colt Hammerless (1908 model) as a house gun?

I have one of these sweet little pistols and shoot it on a regular basis, although I understand parts are becoming a problem. Mine runs like a sewing machine. I think it would make a great house gun for her. It is slim and easy to hide, has little recoil, and with magsafe or RBCD loads, would be a show stopper. The slide is easy to rack and mine has never malfunctioned since I have a had it. Since the hammer is internal, it rides easy in the pocket or purse for her. I really do not think the small safety is a real problem as the thumb comes to rest naturally on it when gripping the pistol. It is a natural pointer and light for an all steel pistol. I have carried mine on occaission as a bu, although it would not be my first choice as a primary. Then again I am not a little old lady. Buy one and let her try it. You can always sell it for what you paid for it. I paid $400, but then again it was pristine original blued (estate collection from you guessed it- a little old lady), with probably not a 200 rounds through it before I bought it.

Oleg,
2 things.
I think, IMHO, you're on the right track. Glenn makes a good point though about training. You might be a little too close to the issue of training, seeings how it's your Mom. A third party might be a better choice.

Second: They make a Micro Camper!!! *Drool*!!! My wife's is the Micro Nickle standard, and all I could find in a Camper was the longer barrel. How's this for a deal. If it is a Micro Camper, and your Mom doesn't like it after she tries it, E-mail me and I give you what you have in it. We'll work out the transfer somehow.

RAE,

Works for me.

At this time, I hope to have mom go through several bricks of .22 and get very good at shooting and clearing malfunctions.

If she doesn't hate me at the end of the learning experience, I will see if I can get a 1903 or a Walther PP or some other mid-size .32 for her to use. Maybe her hands would get stronger and she could move up to a flat 9mm with 115gr ammo but that is unlikely. Pity shoulder arms are out but given her limited training might as well trin her on one design that is useable in case she ever gets a CHL (would have to move to a better state first, I fear).

Hi, Oleg,

Wotinhell is wrong with the Buckmark as a defense gun? If she likes it and can shoot it, she'll be better with that than with something you foist on her.

Now all of you who holler "mouse gun", please volunteer to let me empty a 10 round mag of .22 LR into some portion of your anatomy. Then we will talk about why the .22 is useless.

Jim

My only gripe with .22 is low penetration. I fired a 4" Ruger Mk1 at an old fridge and the ammo (Minimags) stopped after penetrating less than 1/2" of vinyl! Mom might not hit with all of 11 round she has before a reload...although any number of hits would better her chances in the subsequent fistfight :)

OTOH, she's likely to shoot beter with a relatively quiet .22 than with louder guns. Lots of practice is the key here...will have to convince her somehow.
