Colt Govt. model .380 safety question

Colt govt. model .380 safety question

Hi Mikey, I got the plunger in the mail today thanks again for all your help. I wanted to pick your brain about the safety a little more. No worries I don't need any parts just advice..lol. I installed the safety plunger and it works great with the hammer in the uncocked and half-cock positions but when it's cocked it takes more pressure to engage it. I noticed if I pull the hammer as far back as possible the safety will engage just as easy as if it were in the uncocked position. is this right or is something out of place inside? I had Star model Firestar in .40s&w that acted the same way so I don't know if this is the way the Colt safety is supposed to be or not. Any thoughts or insight on this?

Hammer, There is a post on the Gunboard forum (Spanish Pistols) where several of us discuss this very issue with a Star pistol which has the same safety setup as your pistol. A couple of swipes with a stone will probably resolve your problem.

New guy, same question.

I too have a Colt government MKIV Series 80 .380, and am also in need of a safety plunger. I managed to get the spring off of Wolffsprings, and currently have the weapon at a gunsmith near me. I emailed a site that asked users to email for availability, and have yet to hear back. I realize these are hard to find, and I'm new here, piggybacking on an old thread, but I hope one of you might have some insight. Thanks in advance gentlemen (and ladies).

LtDan, i can help with a plunger however I am in Texas hog hunting for a couple of months and all Star parts are home. If you still need it in June PM me.

Dumb Dumb Me...

Yeah, I popped the safety out of my FI Model D, and the plunger and spring went sailing into eternity. Cleaned the room up good trying to find it for the last three hours. I was going to change out all the springs with the Colt Pony kit from Wolffe. It's a jam-o-matic right now. Its dropping the mag and not stripping the next round into the chamber. I replaced the magazine springs with xtra power ones, and that got to to work right some of the time. But the mags still come loose. So I figured I would replace the magazine catch spring and see if that fixed it. Anyway, figured I'd do all of them while I was at it, since it's been around since 74. My question; will a Mustang safety plunger work? Colt has them on their Brownells parts store site.

Next time, I will use a plastic bag, like I should have...

As Indicated before the Colt, Kimber Micro, Sig 238 & 938, FI, IJ Pony, most all of the Stars use the same spring and plunger.

Here is a little trick that can be used with that type of setup.

Make a plunger from a piece of hard drill rod and use a lathe or a file to make a V cut around one end that a coil of the spring will snap into. Join the spring and plunger into one unit. Then spread the coil at the other end of the spring. Now one end of the spring grips the plunger and the other end spreads out to grip the inside of the hammer pivot. When the safety is removed, the pieces stay together and the plunger and spring stay in place until pulled outward.
