Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP

I bought a 1994 Colt 1911 in 1999 for $400 off a gunshow table.
It is a M1991A1 [1911] Commander 45acp.
I showed to to the late great Randy Ketchum and he started listing all modifications he could see. I can't remember much, but Chip McCormick trigger and hammer were two things, I think.
Since then I figured out that it has aftermarket slide release, grips, and recoil spring assembly.
The extra safety of the 1991 design has been disabled and plugged.

It has been a very good pistol for me.

I have several commanders 2 LTW one 45 one 9mm A Dan Wesson bob tail

I like Commander for carry and I like balance over 5" Easier for me to sit also 5" seems to bottom out and then ride up . Maybe I need more rear :D But commander works for me.

The Colt Combat Commander is an excellent 1911. However it is a little expensive. Take a look at Ruger's SR1911 commander. I have one and love it. It's my everyday carry gun. I have never had any problems with it. It comes with Novak sights, extended thumb safety, magazine release and grip safety, skeletal hammer and trigger for about $725.

I bought a set of LOK slim Spec Ops G10 tan and black grips and it really makes the pistol feel better. LOK makes all kinds of grips for the 1911. Different styles and colors. If you get slim grips make sure you get a set of slim bushings and screws. Your stock ones won't work and your grips will be loose. The weight for me is not an issue but you can buy the lightweight model. It has an aluminum frame with a titanium feed ramp and comes with Novak night sights. It is a little more expensive though.

Either way you can not go wrong with a 1911 fullsized or commander. You cant beat something that has been around for over 100 years and something that has been combat proven since WW1.

Who, besides Colt, makes a true Commander length slide with a 4.25" barrel?

S&W, Ruger, Sig Sauer and RIA all offer Commander-sized options. I believe Springfield also does and I am sure there are several others.

I have an original 1970's series Light Weight Commander that was my first carry gun and 1911. Unless you plan on shooting the crap out of it I would go with the LWC if it will be a carry gun.

I found this one at a pawn shop 20 yrs. ago right after the assault weapons ban was passed and prices were high on everything for a bit. If I remember right I think I paid in the $300-350 range for it then in good to very good condition, just light holster wear on muzzle.

I'm from 1969 so not older then me. But get the blued Commander as it's prettier and smoother the stainless version. I have only owned the stainless version from about 10 years ago. And my favorite shooter of all. But I also owned a Python 6" inch blue at same time. And clean up on a Colt blue is so gratifying. Wish I had all the Colt blues I ever had. They make you weep at the beauty.

The Colt would be my first choice of the affordable guns, I wish all my 1911s were Colts. That being said the all steel gun will be more fun to shoot but the lightweight is manageable and more pleasant for carry. I have a Colt lightweight Commander and a Ruger CMD, I like both guns but I've had better luck with Colt 1911s than others.
My 2 cents.

I have an all stainless Commander, reasonably nice, it is my bedside gun. They have mostly MIM parts so not treasures to me, by the time the MIM's are all replaced the cost is way up there, probably as high as a DW which is fit up much better as well as having better parts.

Colt Commanders are nice and have recently had a price drop. I carry a Wiley Clapp Colt/Talo Commander I bought in 2013 and note the new ones are a couple hundred less.

They have mostly MIM parts
I thought that only the Mag catch and lock, sear and disconnector were MIM unless they've added more to the mix... which is possible.

Done right, good to go.

Old thread. Timeless handgun.

Personally I would pick up a Ruger. I just picked up a full size sr 1911. It was hundreds less than the sigs, colts, kimbers etc. It shoots and feels just as good as my 1200 dollar kimber 10mm. The only difference...the ruger actually functions efficient right out of the box from day one. Wish I could say the same for the other gun.
