Color of polymer pistol frames, affect strength?

the color will not effect strength. Unless they use too much color or wrong density plastic. Black is the cheapest as it uses re-ground mixed in. Clear or semi clear is virgin plastic. (At least in making buckets.)

Buckets don't use engineered polymers, but firearms mostly do. There are differences between frames and things such as handguards as well. With over 10,000 families, there are significant differences. I spent 20 minutes in deposition yesterday trying to get an attorney to comprehend such. Commodity polymers such as polypropylene and polyethylene (most buckets) are not affected by colorants, but that is not the same as engineered polymers. Most products made from engineered polymers with strength requirements specifically do not allow re-grind. Also, Natural color can also be bought with regrind and many manufacturers use regrind in house.

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s there was an opinion, fairly widely held among knowledgeable whitewater paddlers, that the yellow pigment that was being added to linear polyethylene kayaks at that time weakened the plastic and made the boat more likely to fold on the paddler's legs.

Gen Xers are between 52 and 37 years old. I don't know if that age group is more likely to buy a different color firearm than other generations but I bet colors like FDE sold a lot more pistols than would otherwise have been purchased.

Already have a Glock? Great but you also need one in FDE. :)

Like others have said I don't think it would affect it enough to be a problem. And if you like color rock on. To me the only limitation is that depending on the color it can affect the ease of resale.

As a COLLECTOR I buy because I want it. What profits can be made will be after I am gone by my kids.:)

I cut and shape a lot of plastics including filled nylons such as those used by gun manufacturers. The pigments definitely effect the strength of the product. I would assume that these manufacturers have a fair bit of overkill built into their designs and have the colored plastics carefully enginered and tested to make sure that it is beyond there minimum specifications. I wouldnt worry about owning a colored polymer anymore than a black polymer pistol. It would be interesting to measure wall thickness and gusset placement in identical pistols of a varying color.

peggysue,
No Equinox Sigs on that wall? I like that AR-15, it would go great with some of my hand drills and saws!

Peggy Sue, I just knew you would be attracted to this thread, you and " the wall of color". I am too traditional and have not gone beyond OD. And FDE but we can always rely on you for bringing the rainbow to the sometimes drab forums.:D
