College and Shooting

Working two jobs and then going to college full time took up most of my free time while in college. At least during my undergrad. Graduate school is even more time intensive, but I make sure that I have time to practice during the summer for hunting season each autumn. ;)

I will look and see if I can find a range local that rents handguns. I know of one or two clubs but cant jusitfy the fees when Im busy with school.

The guns I have now and any future guns will be kept at my parents house (even though I live off campus); for more than a few reasons.

I think I'll keep saving and when I get a week off I will go get my handgun then try to go shooting on long weekends. I will also look into the ROTC/LE program range and see if there are any ranges close that rent.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

During the semester, I go to school two days of the week and work four, leaving me Sundays off. I shoot every other Sunday during the semester and a little more often during the summer. My friend's uncle has a farm that he's kind enough to let us shoot long distances on that we utilize once in a great long while.

If you love doing something, make time for it.

Since muzzle loading rifles, pistols and replica black powder revolvers are considered to be antique firearms, they don't have the same waiting period requirements that modern firearms do.
And perhaps there would be less concern about storing one of them in off campus housing too.
They sure are a lot of fun to shoot with and can open up many opportunities to enjoy the shooting sports while on a tight budget.
If anyone wants to look into it more closely then consider visiting TFL's Black Powder and Cowboy Action Shooting forum. :)

I put aside lots of things when I was in college. I couldn't even think about purchasing firearms due to the tight money. I could barely afford my art supplies and books and that coupled with not having much time anyway, made it hard for hobbies. I worked about 30 hours per week while earning 15 credit hours per semester. I should also mention that the last 2 years of my college career was spent with a wonderful wife and child. All this is why I also gave up playing guitar and sold my nifty 1961 Gibson Melody Maker guitar and vintage Ampeg amp. I wish I still had those 2 items even though the $200 came in handy at the time.
Of course I am making up for that now with 4 guitars and 10 firearms in my belongings along with a bunch of other toys. So be patient, you'll have time after you finish your education.

When i was in college graduated in 73 and 77 i shot on the Central Mo State University indoor range. The Range was operated by the ROTC and Law Enforcement departments.

Unfortunately, I believe they shut it down for general student use.

College is a mixed bag . . . when it comes to guns.

College and shooting are a very mixed bag. I've worked for a small institution that had a "no firearms" on campus policy, but the head of security on that campus let students who hunt store their fire arms at his residence.

I heard about a big university, someplace in the mid west, that had a 22 cal shooting range on campus.

As an academic/artist who also hunts and shoots I'm one of a few, but there are a handful of guys on my campus who are also among those few and we get together a couple times a year for a day of shooting at a DNR range.

I'm in College, going full time; I work full time at night in a warehouse; make a point of exercising 3 times a week (running and weights) and I have a wife and 11 month old daughter at home.

I usually make it to the range once every six weeks or so to shoot my Ruger Mark II and throw some clays with a buddy of mine. My 8MM rifle is quite expensive to shoot though and it's so time consuming to walk 100-150 yards back and forth (can't really afford a spotting scope) so I usually only shoot it around hunting season.

No, being busy 70-ish hours a week does not stop me!

I figure you gotta have some time to relax or you will go crazy being so busy.

Good luck out their and be safe!
