Coated Lead Bullets

I'm almost out of cast lead bullets in 40 and 45 calibers. I'm thinking about trying some coated bullets when I restock.

What is your experience with coated bullets? Know of any trusted vendors?

You are going to love them over cast. I shoot a lot and my pistols are much cleaner than when using straight cast. I use Bayou Bullets and Precision out of Texas. Some guys I shoot with use Blue Bullets. You will only use lead cast in an emergency after trying coated.

I use poly coated bullets from Better Bullets. End of grease smoke and able to push them faster without leading. Only way to go.

www.missouribullet.com is another source of coated bullets called Hi-Tek, now red in color, used to be gold. Whereas most standard bullet lubes are smokey, the Hi-Teks are almost smokeless, an important factor when shooting indoors. Perhaps a down side with missouri bullets is that many or all bullets have to be ordered in lots of 500. I just ordered 500 155 gr .40 cal swc's at $67 which includes shipping. Some, maybe all by now, lack lube grooves which of course are not needed.

Coated, be it hightec, powder coat, etc etc are fantastic, I shoot them out of my pistols and have the same results as stated above, no leading, no smoke, no lead on the hands, its win win. So, pros, all the above, cons...........sliiiiiighlty more expensive. Thats it. I do all my coating at home and Im wondering if thats even worth it give how cheap they are.

Oh about the lube groove, a pro, longer bearing surface, always a good thing.

Any pro to not having lube grooves could be that more bearing surface is covered with the coating, the more the better probably (like Chainsaw said).

There is the assumption that a longer bearing surface is better. Better for what?

There's no evidence that it improves accuracy, as per the link posted above.

Another other benefits? Anyone?

It's not that a longer bearing surface by itself is better, but rather that there would be more interactive coating over a longer surface and that could be an improvement in how the product works.

I have seen some really good coated bullets and some that were not suitable for loading. I typically buy the sample or 100 packs to work up loads to see what works for me. Once I find something that will work I will buy in bulk.

I had a good 45 supplier but the manufacturer suddenly disappeared early last year. I had a bit of a supply and just pressed out the last of them about 2 months ago. I had not found a 9mm that I was happy with. I started a new search and found a 200gr 45 and 2 different weights of 9mm that I was happy with from Bayou Bullets.

The better bullets are usually companies that last. The company I used to get 45's from made a great 45 but I had problems with their 9mm. The 9mm had inconsistent sizing, out of round, and the weight had just over 5gr of deviation.

Gotta give a +1 to the hometown guy! Bayou is about 15 miles down the highway from me. I pick mine up and save on shipping. I got a demo first time I went up there. Very nice! Quality products. Used to be owned by Jerry Miculek's brother who had the franchise, if that makes any difference.

Missouri Bullets Hi-Tek coated bullets have been more accurate for me than plated for about the same price. Highly recommended in both .44 and .45 revolvers.

Everyone has a favorite. So far mine is Acme as well.

However Donnie at summers enterprises llc is now selling hitek as well. His prices I don’t think can be beat and his lswc’s (which I have used) were fantastic. Looking forward to his hitek as well.

Yes, very good prices at Summers Enterprices. I just placed an order for 500 .38 148 gr, dewc's, for $32 and no shipping. These are the red Hi-Tecs. I have two .38 autos, and one, the S&W 52 requires flush seating, hence the duel ends.
