CMP Surplus Amo - Any good?

Chris B,

I think we just have a terminology use difference. You said "M2 ball and HXP chambers just like 30-06". I am pointing out that they are not merely "like .30-06", but they are .30-06; just different loadings of it.

Yes, that is what has been confusing me.
If I were to call and order, from CMP, ammunition that is the exact required specs for a Remington 7600 30-06 and would provide a significant discount over retail....what would that item be listed as?

Thanks!

Again, any of their .30-06 will be ballistically compatible with your 7600, except I would avoid any that has corrosive primers as the gas mechanism of the 7600 doesn't strip down as easily for cleaning as the Garand and M14 gas systems do. Fortunately for you, the corrosive primed ammo is all listed as "out of stock" so that choice isn't available anyway. No chance of confusion there. Right now of the three they do have in stock, HXP is the most economical. Hornady 150 grain load is next in economy. The Hornady 168 grain A-max load has the least economy, but they will all work in the gun. Their accuracy will tend to correspond with the price. The more you pay, the more accuracy potential in the load.

In your shoes, I would buy the HXP and think about the more expensive ones only if the HXP proved unsatisfactory.

Since I reload, I don't usually keep track of loaded ammunition prices, but these days fifty-five cents a round is pretty inexpensive. You'll have to do some comparison shopping to see if you can do any better.

:) Agreed.

I hope so, I just sent my paperwork for 2 bins of ammo and my first m-1

Congratulations on the purchase of a very special rifle :)

You won't be disappointed with the HXP. I've put 5 spam cans through my CMP M1 so far. Not a single hiccup. Worst I've seen is some dirty en bloc clips- one whole can. I had to unload each clip, wipe the clip down, dry it, and reload

Funny thing is that most of those clips were WWII era SA manufacture but the headstamps were all '72 on the ammo
