Cleaning How Often

I'm sure that it is not a necessity to clean your gun after every firing. I know people that never clean their guns. That said, I field strip and clean every one of my guns even if I only fire one single shot! Like I said, I am sure the world will not stop if I don't clean it, but I like to have a clean gun and I like to clean them.

I'm an ex-Jarhead so I'm a bit anal-retentive about things like this. I clean my guns (and magazines if not a revolver) after every range trip, even my Ruger 22s - no exceptions. This is why I never bring any more than two different guns to the range at any one time any more.

One time I was entertaining guests and brought six different guns to the range. It was fun while we were shooting, but I was hating life afterwards though.

Brian48, must be a Brian thing! ;) I'm exactly the same way. I also clean my mags, but don't disassemble them. do you disassemble yours?

I agree. Not necessary to have home fire and theft insurance, either. Look at all the silly folks who've been paying for it and never needed it. Same with airbags, but they're a requirement.

Handguns get cleaned after every trip to the range. Just not the much work to stip and clean them.

Shotguns (trap guns) get cleaned after every 400 or 500 rounds unless the choke is showing lots of burned plastic from the wads.

Rifles - don't get used that much. Tend to clean them after each use.

A gunsmith advised me not to use my brass bore brushes every time I clean my guns, as excessive use can wear out the rifling. He pointed out that a soft material can wear down a harder material in time, like water over rock. I'll clean my guns after every shooting session, but I'll just use patches, bore mops, and Butch's Bore Shine about three out of every four times.

I could be wrong, but my gut tells me that the abrasive effects of fouling cause more wear than regular but careful disassembly.
