Bore snake works fine for my handgun barrels and rimfires. Rifles, not so much...

While there is nothing wrong with using a padded VISE, it is generally not necessary.
barrel cleaning, gloves, magnifying glasses....
For cleaning, I use a BoreSnake on pistol barrels too. It's fast & cleans more surface area.
I use non toxic or non CFC cleaning products but for safety reasons, Id suggest medical gloves if you have issues with common CLPs or sprays/oils/greases etc.
Good firearm CLPs like Slip2000, Balistol, etc help but it's important to read & follow the posted directions.
A magnification glass helps too.
