Cimarron Dragoon

Well at lest you fed that fine smoker with some
REAL black powder:D that is what it was made
for not that bakeing powder:p.
I know you said its not to much of a hassle, but
it does not look to good when you let that boom
go and guys see your lever drop and then the wisper
wisper, maybe i am to finaky dont mind me still glad
you like that fine smoke pole.

PARD you say you shot about 30 shots how many
shots do you think you shot before your cylinder
got a little tight, and tell me of your cleaning metherd
so you can carry on shooting, you see all my bp guns
are 58 remmys and i can pop my cylinder out in a split
seconed, and i know the colt style you have to knock
out the wedge to remove the cylinder, do not get me
wrong straight shooter i am not knocking the open top
style i just want to check out the proes and cons of
the colt style before i go and spend some cash,
all your input would be cool thanks.:D

I too had nothing but closed top BP guns before getting this Dragoon. At 24 rounds I opted to tap the wedge out with a handle of a screwdriver. Two taps and it was out. Then you just lower the lever and press against the cylinder with the lever and the barrel comes off. Finally just pull the cylinder off. All can be done in about 15 seconds. I done a minor wipe down of the cylinder and barrel and reassembled again in about 15 seconds.

Honestly I never once noticed the action or cylinder getting tight at any point. I just disassembled it once to get the lube from the lube wads I used off of the cylinder and barrel.

Only thing you have to watch is when you tap the wedge back in that you don't tap it in too far or the cylinder will bind. You do it once or twice and you can eyeball where the wedge needs to be.

Side Note: A person on another forum said I need to deepen the grove in the lever catch with a hacksaw and all will be good. No more lever drop. He done this on his and he said it works great. He said nothing more than a couple of strokes with the blade is all.

2nd Model Dragoon

This thread is so timely...I just purchased a NIB 2nd model dragoon from a pard over on SASS, great shooter...just fired 24 rounds through it on Tuesday. 18 rounds at a target out at 75 yards using 30 grains on fffg, still shot high and a bit right. I adjusted and set the target at 50 yards, I'm happy with it; a bit more shooting and I'll be in there. Just to let you all know, the cylinder did tighten up a bit at 18 rounds, used a little "moose milk" and it was fine. The loading lever also dropped about six times.

At any rate, it's a good shooter (great trigger pull out of the box). BTW I have, and shoot a Walker, and two 1860 Army's.

Need some more Dragoon help

Guys,

I took my 3rd Model Dragoon out for a run & it's a blast

I've busted my gun hand up so to shoot I'm only using 35grn fffg & it's very comfortable to shoot. Now the question I have for you guys is what are the squared trigger guards on the Dragoon like when fired I will more than likely have to shoot reduced loads for quite some time they tell me & it appears that I have the last 3rd model Dragoon here in Australia I have to get another Dragoon within a month as my permit runs out & the only other Dragoon is a Whitneyville with the squared T/G. just need to know do I have to worry about the squared T/G when I'm using a reduced load ?

Beretta Australia is very slow to get Uberti's in to this country & a friend had to wait 18 months for a 38-40 S.A. revolver & I don't want to wait that long for a Dragoon:eek: I like the look of the Whitneyville Dragoon but the T/G worries me a little bit.

Any help would be much appreciated.:D

Take care & all the best from Australia.

Whitneyville Dragoon

Mate, I've got one and it feels just fine.
Looks great as well.
It has the grip and stock of the Walker which I think is slimmer and a bit longer than the normal dragoon.
No problems with the squared TG, even at full bore.
Big hands have tried it and not been tapped on the knuckle or finger.
Waited about 8 months as well; about $560 from Cleavers.
That help?

Thanks blackhawk13,

Mate Cleavers were suppose to get me 2 x 3rd models & stuffed up the order apparently & ordered me 1 x Whitneyville  So they tell me it SHOULD be in on Tuesday :rolleyes:

Shot the 3rd model yesterday & had a blast :)

Thanks again Mate.

Take care.

44goon.

The Whitneyville Dragoon is on it's way to me :D

Should have it next week if all goes to plan ;)

I'll post some picks of my Dragoons together when I have them.

blackhawk13, can you let me know what you load in your Whitneyville ?

I used a 457 RB & 25grns of fffg for western action & it shoots well for that distance. I have found that the 457 ball shaves a nice ring off the ball.

Thanks Mate.

I tried .457 balls, and enough powder to still fit ball in.
Went bang very satisfactorily!!
Actually I forget exactly what I finished up using.
Loading lever kept falling down; will have to fix that with a bit of careful filing.
