chose a S&W 357 over a Colt 1911 did I make a mistake?

you have my condolences...

I agree that you cannot go wrong with either one. The purpose of the gun is something to remember your dad by, pick whichever one you fancy the most and don't look back. Monetary value is meaningless since you wont be reselling.

You love one, your brother loves the other. They are both incredible guns. You made the right choice as far as its meaning to both of you.

Im sorry about your father.

I would pick the S&W revolver over the pistol. I much prefer revolvers and that long barrel will do fine on the range, or the field. If you have ever thought of hunting with a handgun, forget the pistol.

I will start off with saying it is never easy to deal with a situation with an ailing parent. You have my prayers, and understanding.

Ok now either of those guns are great guns regardless of resale value. Your dad has exceptional taste in guns. Both are great shooters, both are among the finest out of the box shooters you could buy of thier time. The S&W would not be a bad choice at all if it is the one you choose becasue you like it more, and will shoot it more, while remembering your dad.

If it comes down to it if you and your brother have trouble coming to a decision then just toss a coin. Both guns are great, and both you can shoot the snot out of for many years to come.

My choice would have been the 1911 even though I'm usually a revolver guy. That particular model just doesn't appeal to me. Your brother sounded really happy so since you are getting a fine firearm as well it sounds like you made the best choice.

Wheel gun

I would go with the 357. Both are great guns but I would always take a 357 over a 45. I have several autos and like them. I love my 357 and 44 more...

I really like the 357 and would enjoy it more since I'm a rifle guy and like target shooting.

You made the right choice. And your brother is happy with the Colt. It's a win - win.

I'm sorry to hear about your father.

A few years back my father gave me a S&W 357 as a gift. He had given my brother one of the first Remington semi 12 gauges that had been his fathers and then his farm gun as he was growing up. He knew I was jealous even though I never told him and one day he asked me what I wanted. I needed a good revolver for a hiking/ woods/camping gun Naturally I looked at the ruger gp-100 as I didn't want him to spend more than he needed... He grabbed the 686 w/ 4"barrel and said I used to carry a smith 357..." Long story short.... The 357 has turned out to be such a great gun. Just as everyone said it would. I have more valuable guns or at least they would probably fetch more if I were to sell them... but because it was a gift from my father.... It is the most valuable gun I have. I will never sell it. Maybe someday when I'm old and my grip strength has weakened to the point holding on to it becomes a question... I will pass it on to someone I care about who I know will appreciate it.

Regardless.....Either are great guns... Enjoy it.

A few months back I asked my two sons to put in their preferences for my guns when I pass. I was surprised by their choices and their consideration for their brother. Most of their picks were "because I have good memories of it" or "I always thought it was cool" as compared to the resale value.

Get the one you really want. It's not about the monies....it's about your dad.

My condolences reguarding your dad. I hate to hear about that. If both guns are in good shape by the pics they both look great to me and you chose that revolver you didnt make any mistake. Either one would be a wise choice. forget about the money value.

Sorry about your Dad. I say you seem to be torn between the 2 guns and I can understand why, both are very nice. If you are back and forth why not just let your bro pick. Maybe he would like one much more and you seem like you will be happy with either.

Neither choice is a mistake. It all boils down to which one YOU like best. $$$ wise, they are about the same, or at least close to it.

And my sympathies to you for your father. I've been down that same "dealing with Alzheimer's" road myself.

I'm goinng to take the 357 because I like target shooting and plinking and I remember the 357 being the more accurate of the two and just plain fun to shoot. My little brother on the other hand likes the Colt alot, you'd think he won the lottery when I called him and told him he's getting a Colt 1911.
Sounds as if there are three winners here...you, your brother and your father.
You have already expressed which one you like..stick with it and enjoy.

^^^^^ What he said.

If your brother and you are happy, I will bet your Dad is happy.

I got my Dad's guns when he died and my brother did not want any of them.

I gave a Ruger 10-22 and K4 Weaver to my uncle who really liked fishing with my Dad.

I gave his Browning Sweet 16 to a cousin from Mississippi who loves quail hunting.

I kept the old Ranger .22 pump rifle. The first time my Dad took me shooting, we used this old rifle. My Dad set a dime in a tree and challenged me to shoot it. It took a while but I did hit it and the bullet made a tear in the dime.

I have the dime and I have the rifle. It has every bump and scratch that my Dad and I ever made in it over the years.

The rifle has "character"

It is priceless to me...for anyone else...not so much.
