I have had a S&W M&P 40, and a walther PPQ M2.

I highly recommend the walther. Extremely well made, extremely accurate, very ergonomic, just a great striker fired. Gun. Best polymer striker fired pistol available in my opinion, the trigger cannot be beat.

"For a .40 duty/nightstand/range gun, the CZ75B is nothing short of terrific."

True. I also like the Beretta Inox .40.

Though I voted for the HK USP 40 (a pistol I've owned since 1994 and like a lot), the one I recommend is one that I also own but is not on your list of choices, the "original" .40 S&W pistol, the Smith "Third Generation" Model 4006. Though long discontinued, it is a well-made, reliable pistol that can be had in very good condition for well under $500.00.

I will simply speak off of the ones I have had and carried in the past, the Beretta 96D Centurion, Stoeger 8040 Cougar, SW99 QA, and Walther PPQ M1. As strange as a choice as it might be, if I had to choose one of those again it would be the Cougar. Yes, a little heavier than poly pistols but the extra weight combined with the rotating barrel helped soak up the recoil, it was dead nuts accurate, and built like a tank. I enjoyed the PPQ and SW99, but not enough to supplant the Beretta family member.

Concerning the Steyr, I've had a couple in 9mm and they were flawless, and a close friend bought one in .40 and has nothing but good to say about it, having fired close to 1k rounds through it.
