I want to buy my first 40. It will be used for carry, special details, CCW etc. I have a list that I have been researching. Respectfully request thoughts, opinions on the firearms and experience of any. Lets go to the polls:cool:

Is there something wrong with the HK VP 40 you said you bought back in Feb. or are you just trolling?
Also you voted 3x on your own poll. Why is that?

I have 2 Para 16-40's 1 limited and the other regular (Canadian) that each have thousands of rounds through them and never missed a beat. The Limited I just got a spare barrel and had it reamed to 10mm, changes some springs and a EGW flat fireing pin block and it too is a great shooter when you want a bit more than a 40 :-))

I had a CZ 75B .40S&W and a Gen4 G-22 that I didn't like. I had an HK USP 40 that I liked and I still have a Sig P226 .40S&W that I like a lot.

It was sold to help take care of an obligation from a tragedy in our family. This poll and post is very genuine in the right to post and see what others have to say. Not to play around. You have a right to post what you want as others. If you don't want to be a part of this post fine. Then move on you all.

Beretta Px4 Storm subcompact

Howdy,

Last Fall I opted to replace my aging Detective Special with a Beretta Px4 Storm subcompact in .40 S&W. So far it's been 100% reliable and the recoil somewhat milder than expected. I've no prior experience with 3-inch barreled pistols and my accuracy isn't up to the same level as I enjoy on my full sized 92FS, although more practice would surely help.

I've carried 45acp's, 9mm and 44spl revolvers for concealed carry and was never really comfortable with them. Each one had it's own issue. A sharp corner on the slide, sights stick up to high and dig into your side and so on, etc...
When I bought my SR40C it was the most comfortable gun I ever carried.
Lighter than a 45acp or 44spl wheel gun. Not much wider than any of my 9mm's. Slightly heavier than a 9mm but not really noticeable.
I just love it.:)
Good power and bullet weight.
The only thing I did was change the striker spring to a Wolf spring to ensure I did not have any problems with light strikes.
Some 2,000+ rounds later and 5 years and I have no plans on changing carry guns.

Haven't you heard? ".40 is dead" so says the wisdom of the internetz.

My .40 XD (-s, plural) have worked well for me, and the Mod 2 is the same thing internally.

I think you should go to a retail outlet and hold as many on your list as you can. One will be better feeling in your hand, point easier and generally speak to you telling you this is the one to buy.

For example, I have a Glock hand. They work well with me but I didn't vote in your poll because I know that one size / style does not fit all.

YOU need to find your gun. We can't find it for you.

I have had 4 guns in .40 S&W... ( sold a Wilson Combat 1911 5" gun in .40 S&W because I hardly ever shot it -- and a guy came along and offered me a lot more money than I paid for it - he loved it and didn't want to wait 2 yrs for a special order to come thru from Wilson... ).... but I still have a Sig 226, a Sig X-Five and a Sig 239...in .40 S&W.

If I was really going to carry a gun in .40 S&W, I would have kept the 1911.../ but I will occasionally carry the Sig 239...its small, light, easy to carry - and its as small as I can go and still have a gun that fits my large hands. So that is my choice in .40 S&W...

The bigger picture for me ...is I'm kind of over the .40 S&W caliber...and have moved on to a 9mm...especially in my primary carry gun ( a Wilson 1911 in 5" as well ).../ Sig 226 is too wide to comfortably carry IWB and Sig X-Five is too wide and way to heavy ( 55 oz ) - both fun to shoot ..but I've never carried either one. So to me, the .40 S&W is an in between caliber..and it gets left out in terms of what I carry.

If for some reason I change my mind on carrying the 1911 in 9mm ...I will carry a Wilson 1911 in .45 acp ...or other 1911's in 9mm.../ ..or a number of S&W revolvers in .357 Mag in 2 1/2" or 4"...and they all get carried more than even my Sig 239 in .40 S&W.

I don't like or want any of the poly frame gun options...but its up to you, what fits your hands the best....no a consensus / or what suits me the best. Buy what you want ...what fits your hands the best...with the controls, etc you like the best.

About two weeks ago a buddy of mine rented an HK USP 40, which I already like the platform and gun a lot in 9mm and 45ACP, so I naturally liked the HK USP 40 as well. Definitely recommend it. Good weight, recoil is managed very well, and it's an HK.

It must be a .40?
I don't think there's enough ballistic advantage over 9mm - if there actually is any - to justify the additional recoil and reduction in capacity.

I voted Glock, but thats just because of the versatility with a glock. Aftermarket support/reliability/caliber conversion, all reasons to go with a glock.

But for the money you will be hard pressed to find a better gun for the price of the FNS 40 from PSA.
