Chiappa Rhino

Love Gun

New member
Anybody seen one of the new Chiappa Rhinos? Is it true they're designed by the same guy who designed the Mateba Unica? I haven't seen one at my favorite gunstore yet.

Only pics.

I'm intrigued by the cosmetic looks of it, but safety has me saying "no" to it.

With a conventional revolver, if you have a case blow up and it shatters the cylinder, it blows out the cylinder fragments in a 60 degree arc straight up, and blows the topstrap upwards.

With one of these, the fragments of the cylinder would shred your hand and the "bottomstrap" is the trigger assembly area. It isn't as strong as a conventional topstrap, meaning it will blow out more violently than a topstrap would. Your finger is right under that.

A blowout on a Chiappa Rhino will cost you your trigger finger, possibly your entire hand.

Most blowouts in conventional revolvers end up costing the shooter a fresh pair of boxers and maybe the cost of a new gun if not covered under warranty.

Add to that, there's the issue of sight convergence. The Rhino has sights on top, barrel on bottom. For small target precision shooting (pistol hunting, target shooting, etc) it has the same drawbacks as a traditional AR-15. The sights are REALLY high compared to the bore. The bullet has to arc up to meet the line of the sights, then it naturally either travels above the point of aim for awhile, or drops below again.

I really wanna hold one,,,

H&H Gun Store in Ok City has an indoor range and an impressive number of rental handguns,,,
When I called and asked them if they had one for rental I was told there was a long waiting list I could be added to.

I am very intrigued by the looks of the 4" barrel model,,,
I'm not going to rush out and buy one,,,
I just wanna rent and shoot one.

No, it was designed by a guy who is 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 Chinese. His name is Uhg Lee!!!

I think they're kinda cool lookin'! Then again i've always been intrigued by things of that sort.

Thanks for the good feedback from everyone though!

Rhino Status

I e-mailed Chiappa a couple mos. ago and the owner replied saying May would be the roll-out month. He was very optimistic about the release date. Appears too much so as I have not seen any hide nor hair of the elusive Rhino. I am intriqued by any new engineering. Hurry up and wait to quote the addage. We'll see.

I've been waiting to get my hands on one.....

The 4" was supposed to hit the U.S. market in March.

The 6", 8", and a 2"(?) were supposed to be introduced in waves, starting in April.

The entire line-up was supposed to be "on dealer shelves" by "Mid-June".

It is now almost July, and I have not heard of a single sighting. I think something is amiss....

For a forum dominated by men interested in accurate, dependable and powerful guns, Im always amazed at how there are so many fussyboots over how pretty their pistolas simply HAVE to be! :p :D

Nothing wrong with wanting acurate, dependable, powerful,,,

And pretty,,, ;)

Ugly guns are like Mo-Peds,,,
They will get ya on down the road just fine,,,
But you don't want your friends to ever see you riding one.

I will never go for form over function,,,
But there's nothing wrong with function and form.

Besides, that Rhino might just be one hell of a shooter,,,
There's something to be said for having the barrel low in the grip,,,
According to Jerry Miculek(?) (the S&W guy) it lines up the recoil with the arm bone.

I've never been an early adopter of new technology. Something that so ridiculously flouts the natural order of whatever technology is concerned is automatically gonna be an over my dead body thing. Someone else can find out if this thing is a useless abomination.

I felt the same way about the miller lite, Windows 95, and the glock, too.

Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

I am on the waiting list,,,

To rent one,,,
Not to buy one.

I just wanna give it a try and find out for myself if there really is a difference and if it's a good diff or a bad diff.

Maybe ugly isn't the right word, more like weird!
I do have ugly guns, what's more ugly than an 1895 Nagant?

Nagant's aren't ugly,,,

I love the look of the late 1800's military revolvers,,,
The Webleys, French Lebels, Russian Nagants,,,
They all had a no-nonsense utilitarian look.

They somehow remind me of steam locomotives,,,

Aaron: Is that Webley a DA action?

That trigger pull looks awfully short to get a DA stroke into the system. Must be a beast of a pull.

The trigger/grasp on the Rhino is really odd. Most triggers come straight back. This one arches up and back. The grip also looks like it is very different from the traditional revolver grip angle. The whole thing looks like the rig from Blade Runner, or the prop-guns from Battlestar Galactica (not the FN57's... the other ones).

I think a shooter would have to angle the wrist down for traditional target shooting in comparison to a regular revolver. I wonder what recoil forces would do to the small wrist bones due to this unorthodox wrist alignment and linear recoil force?
