Hi all,

Does anyone, especially bird hunters, have an opinion on the VP shooting his partner?

I would have thought ther'd be a 180 rule, but never been bird hunting so I dont want to make any assumptions.

Although I've only been pheasant hunting once and didn't have any close calls,I could see how it could happen. We all try to have safe gun handling habits and we all could sit and say this is an accident that shouldn't have happened,it did and just happened to a very high profile person.
The thing that irks me is the media blowing it WAY out of proportion, not knowing what the heck they're talking about(I've heard buckshot, bullets and other terms thrown about loosely). If this would have happened to any ordinary Joe,it maybe would have made the local news.
But it didn't and now the Bush hating, gun hating media have something to suck on till july.
Now if the same happened to their beloved Kerry,I'd bet my left nut nothing would have made the news or at least some stupid explaination that wouldn't make any sense, like crawling on his belly to hunt deer?
It will be interesting to see if this post has any legs,I'm just expressing my
1st amendment rights to defend the 2nd!

I have not seen the diagram of the incident which is sure to show up, but coming from behind does not necessarily mean from six o-clock

I have hunted all my life and most of it bird hunting. It as an accident nothing more nothing less.If it was anyones fault it was the man for not saying he was back there he would have been safer in front.I wonder how many times this has happened while bird hunting I would say a lot.:(

It happens more often than you might think...

The 180 rule is only good if the hunters are either really close together or very far apart.

Close... you can't help but see each other.
Far... Over 40 yards the pattern isn't very lethal...

This individual, who had been far behind... caught up with the 180 line and retook a position that VP Cheney thought was temporarily "unassigned".

No one knew he had caught up again...

Most birders have been hit by shot, or at least been present when other birders were hit. Again, 40 plus yards and 180 rules, make "serious accidents" like this one a rare thing.

What can I say... "Dukakis happens!" :D :p :D

That was for us oldtimers who remember...

If it was anyones fault it was the man for not saying he was back there he would have been safer in front

Huh? How do you figure? We always form a line with 3 shooters (regardless of the party size). We know where everyone is and follow the 180 rule. The dogs are great for holding point and a kicker flushes the birds.

On a side note...how would you like to be the secret service on a trip like that? I'd be as nervous as a quail in a hawk storm.

The ultimate resposibility always lies with the guy who pulled the trigger, and Cheney admitted that it was his fault, yes they are both at fault at some levels, luckily it wasn't as serious as it could have been. If Cheney would have glanced over at the area, it probably would not have happed, but when you are trying to close with a covey, that is where your attention is. I am not trying to defend either man, but I would hate to be in either man's position.

This kind of thing happens hundreds of time a year during hunting season, just because it is a high profile case teh left wing media has to anilize every little thing.

Put the crackpipe down. Seriously.

I agree with Kudu also - the responsibility ALWAYS lies with the man with the gun. End of story. When you have something in your hands which can take a life, it doesn't matter if the guy is silently approaching or not - you have to be aware.

Cheney himself admitted this today as well. And he's right.

From a shotgun standpoint, it's startling but true that most every bird hunter I've met whose done it over a long course of years has been peppered at least once, though never seriously enough to get sent to the ICU. Thank god for safety glasses, or at least one I know would have been blinded. Cheney had a 28-gauge, right? That probably saved the man's life.

There Is Fault

When a nonhunter accompanies a bird hunter in the field they are asked to walk directly behind the guy with the gun. Do you know why? Because you should not turn around on a swing.

There is also some information that we are not getting.

The guy that handles my FFL tranfers also has a day job. He works for our state's department of justice. He helps recreate shooting crimes. He does CSI sort of stuff. He shoots into dummies at different distances and at different angles. He tries to determine how far the shot took place from. He is obviously knowledgable about ballistics.

I had a chance to chat with him about this incidence.

His told me that at the reported 30 yards distance, he could not have been hit with a hundred pellets. He said that could only happen at a distance of no more then 15 yards. That distance could also explain a pellet causing a cardiac inducing wound.

wrong pinky..ghetto needs to continue smoking his pipe until he croaks..then we can dump his corpse into a hole..say a few hosansas..uh I mean God have mercy..then move on with the positive thought that the earth is better without him...

about the accident..sounds like that is what it was...did Cheney not see him?..was the shot man concealed behind vegetation..I would be leery walking about knowing other hunters could be moving towards me looking for birds...unfortunate is what it was..but the news-dipstix will bleed it for all it's worth of course...

Ill say the same thing I said on the five or six other threads regarding the Cheney ACCIDENT. Hunting accidents occur quite often and it so happens it involved the VP this time. Oh God, the VP shot someone on ACCIDENT, everyone stop what your doing and come and bad mouth Cheney. Some of you need to get a life and find other things to talk about. This is merely digging from the bottom of the barrel and nothing else.

o yes anyone who doesnt totally agree with dubya must be a terrorist HAHA U MORON!!!!!!
Well until you came trolling along nobody was talking about anything but hunting and personal responsibility.

"If Cheney would have glanced over at the area,"

The article in yesterday's Washington Post quoted the county sheriff. It seems that Mr. Whittington was in a "dried up pond" "several feet lower" than where the two hunters were standing. In addition, he had the setting sun behind him and the wind was "gusting" enough to impair communication.

Earlier reports mentioned that he "stood up" and I couldn't quite understand how this would enter into it. Now I think I'm beginning to see how things unfolded. One question I still have is whether this was a short-grass area or if there was some tall grass, bushes, etc.

Of course, the guy with the gun has the final responsibility.

John

Ghetto...Duyba might have jumped the gun in invading Iraq. Then again after watching the Saddam tapes on ABC news last night I might be wrong again. I started supporting Bush during 9/11 and before the War, to thinking he was an idiot when the found no WMD and the insurgency took hold (I did not vote in 2004 because Kerry just as bad) , now I'm realizing looking at all the evidence he is only human and no matter what party you belong to you are going to make mistakes.

Now getting back to shotguns and hunting. What concerns me is that Cheney might not of had a license to hunt. I wonder if he is even an experienced hunter and shooter. I don't like bird hunting in large groups because I feel it is unsafe. Too many guns and too many people walking around, even for an experience hunter accidents can happen

Mikeyboy please start a thread on this, I missed it last night.

I have only posted once here regarding the topic, mostly because I have only hunted birds like this once in my life, but I am learning alot from the discussion and for some reason it is renewing my interest in bird hunting, but around here it would be dove
