Checking my ccw on the plane

I've flown with firearms twice. Neither time was the checked bag held at a secure point upon arrival. I merely retreived it from the baggage carousel.

I agree with the OP. It is relatively painless to travel with a firearm these days. One airline actually let me cram four firearms and ammunition in one locked container and the TSA had no problems with it.
 
Guess we have had different experiences then. My last trip with checked firearms was this past August, ATL-SEA round trip, and it went the way I described.

Edit: it is possible that my experience was specific to Delta's interaction with TSA. Several years ago, when flying MCO-HNL on American, my bags did go on the carousel. I had thought my latest experience meant the rules had changed.

Edit: After TSA inspects your checked bag, they keep custody of it and see that it gets loaded on the plane. The bag itself gets a second, small sticker of the type you get on the back of your boarding pass (and you get its mate, on your boarding pass...)

The second sticker should tell baggage handlers and TSA at the destination airport to take that bag to the controlled TSA pick-up area, where you will need to show photo ID or claim ticket to retrieve it.

The bag should not end up on the normal carousel - though if it doesn't show at controlled pick-up in a timely manner, you might want to check the carousel. That is where mine turned up at ATL... The system did work properly at the SEA end.

This is NOT the way it worked when I flew with three handguns earlier this year. No TSA involvement, no sticker, no special pickup. Went through ATL on Delta.

Maybe you're on some special list. ;)
 
Or maybe they were trying a new method, and have since discontinued it. Got me... But that is how mine went in August.
 
It's different in every single airport. The airlines have their rules and the TSA has theirs. Most of the airline employees don't have any idea what's allowed or not. Most of the TSA make up the rules as they go. It's a mess. Pack your gun and any ammo exactly how the airline website describes. Make a copy of their rules and carry it with you. But never argue with the TSA no matter what they tell you. They believe they're in charge of the whole universe.
 
I have flown quite a few times with many differant airlines, to both domestic and international destinations with guns in baggage, and I have always picked up my gun cases at the general baggage claim.
 
Dumb question? Um? Who is responsible if once you reach your destination and either your firearm is missing or your luggage carrying your firearm is missing? I travel to Idaho quite often and would love to take my gun with me. I just would be nervous about my firearm getting lost/stolen :confused::confused:
 
That would be the airline that is responsible, but I suspect they have limits to their liability some where in the fine print.

when I flew a while back, just like every body else the tag was inside my luggage nothing on the outside... then again when I got to where I was going... the tag was then inside the pistol case.. and I had another note in my luggage that it had been searched for my protection...

on the way back I got diverted and got home a few hours quicker than scheduled....my luggage came latter... the next day a cab driver delivered my luggage with the pistol in it.

interesting thing is when I reported I didn't get my luggage on arrival and the Delta clerk checked their computer, they knew right away there was a gun in it.

That's a risk but it's an acceptable risk for me in order to have concealed-carry protection when travelling.
 
I will say the couple times I've done it now my bag has come out in the first three bags so I think it gets special handling
