Second time flying with a gun. Sitting outside the little special screening room now......

It's really a fairly painless process. More people should exercise the right.

been a while since I flew, like 3 years, is this where they take you to get a feel?
 
Speaking of fliying My boss is so used to carrying he forgot he had a .32 in his pocket until he got to security check point and started emptying his pockets. This post just made me think of that.
 
It is indeed easy. Too many get too :confused::confused::confused::confused: about the whole thing yet don't check with their airline to see what's involved - very little actually. have done it a couple times and never had a single issue.

There is no retrieval process. The luggage pick up areas are not in secure parts of the airports. Since your gun is in your checked luggage, you pick up your luggage and you're on your way, no checks or anything.
 
Does anyone know what the ammo restrictions for traveling are? Can you pack your unloaded locked gun in the case with a loaded mag in the case also? Or do the mags need to be unloaded?
 
Ammo depends on the airlines. It can be packed in the same case as the gun. The general rule is an appropriate container - the original box or a plastic ammo box. Some will allow loaded mags if they're enclosed in a mag pouch. When I fly I just use the original ammo box and load my mags when I reach my destination, no questions, hassles, or confusion.

hmm ... so the weapon is unsecured in a baggage claim area?

That is NOT how it is supposed to work (though it did happen to me once; TSA supervisor was not happy, and I was assured some corrective training would take place.)

Edit: After TSA inspects your checked bag, they keep custody of it and see that it gets loaded on the plane. The bag itself gets a second, small sticker of the type you get on the back of your boarding pass (and you get its mate, on your boarding pass...)

The second sticker should tell baggage handlers and TSA at the destination airport to take that bag to the controlled TSA pick-up area, where you will need to show photo ID or claim ticket to retrieve it.

The bag should not end up on the normal carousel - though if it doesn't show at controlled pick-up in a timely manner, you might want to check the carousel. That is where mine turned up at ATL... The system did work properly at the SEA end.

Federal law prohibits marking the exterior of the bag in any way that indicates it contains a firearm. The procedure you describe would not comply with that statute.
 
I wouldn't fly with a CCW checked in the winter anywhere in the North East, god forbid your flight is diverted to NJ or another gun-unfriendly state you may face some serious legal ramifications.

I've flown many, many times in the last 5 or 6 years, always with a gun in my checked luggage (except when travelling internationally). I've never seen the TSA keep custody of my bag, after they've inspected it (which is not every time) they just send it down the conveyor belt with all the others. Also, my luggage has always come out on the regular carousel. In fact, prior to your post, I've never heard of the TSA maintaining custody of anyones luggage because of a gun or anyones luggage going to a secure area for pick up. Nor have I heard of or seen any bags with guns in them being tagged for any special attention. In addition, my boarding passes are not flagged in anyway because I had a gun in my luggage.

Nope and nope.

At least not in Denver and New Orleans.
