Cheap 22 Handgun

OK guys, What is the best (in your opinion) cheap 22 handgun? Revolvers and autos alike, I'm looking at $300.00 tops out the door. I have heard of FTE problems with some of the newer blow back autos but if you have one and love it, let me know. I just want to have a fun to shoot, cheap, reliable, and some what accurate handgun. Thanks Have fun with this one.:D

Just looked up the Neos, that looks like it's from Star Trak or something. My 8yr old would like it though and he'll be shooting this gun a lot with me.

It kind of depends on the grip size you prefer. I have a few .22 pistols. The Neos has a small grip and the S&W 22A has a large grip. Both work pretty well and are very accurate with the right ammo. Most .22 pistols will be more accurate with a certain ammo. Which one it is hard to say. You just need to try some different ones to find out what works best in your pistol. Generally speaking CCI SV (standard velocity) and CCI Mini-Mags seem to work pretty good. I have had some very good results with CCI Pistol Match as well. The Pistol Match is rather expensive and isn't something I would consider using for plinking. Federal Auto Match from Wal-Mart seem to work pretty good for the price. Wolf Target match does a really nice job in a couple of my pistols as well.

Back to your question, The Neos and the 22A both will probably suit your needs. Also a BuckMark camper might work as well. I have these three and a few others as well.

Heritage makes cheap .22/.22mag combo revolvers. Mine is fairly accurate. They are fun to shoot and you have the .22 mag option. The .22lr cylinder shoots shorts and longs also. Mine ran me only $175. Not built like a Ruger Single Six, but cheap and built well enough for that caliber. Inexpensive way to get a .22 if you like single actions.

I'll double the Heritage Rough Rider suggestion. I had to take a file to the front sight on mine. But aside from that it's a great little gun that should only cost you about $200. For the price of one Single Six you could get two of these.

It's also the only revolver I've ever seen that has a safety. Safety switch + single action = pretty safe gun for a young child.

My wife has and loves her Ruger 22/45. Very nice gun. I have a Browning Buckmark that is a good gun too. Heritage is cheapest of those we have, and shoots 22 mag if that is something you are interested in.

I just bought a Bersa Firestorm 22lr. It shoots straight and eats everything I have fed it. I also enjoy my Heritage Roughrider.

I have been concidering the Heritage Rough Rider in 22/22mag, but the Sig Mosquito looks pretty good too, but the Mosquito is the one I have heard of having FTE trouble. What about the Walther 22, anyone have one of those?

Can you get bigger grips for the rough Rider, they're a little small for me but would be great for my son. Changing the grips out for him would be nice.

I have 2 ruger single six that I bought under $300 used last year. One stainless and one blued. Both are more accurate than me and about as much fun as you can have with a handgun. Neither came with the 22 mag cylinder. A local shop in my town has one currently for $289. It only has the .22lr cylinder.

If you look around finding a single six under $300 shouldn't be too hard if you are willing to go without the 22mag option. IMO it is the best 22 you can buy without getting into alot of money.

You can also have alot of fun changing the grips. Lots of grip options out there fir the ruger single actions. Word of warning though it can get addictive. I have bought 2 ruger blackhawk( same frame as single six) because I found some grips I had to have. Of course once you have some grips you gotta have a gun to put them on
;)
The ruger 22/45 is also a good option. I have one that I got NIB for $299 a year or so ago. Very nice gun just not as much fun to me as the single action

Used Ruger Mk. I or Mk. II

My local shop has a Mk. I for sale for $200. Rugers are great guns, and this one is especially great, being the one Bill Ruger built his whole business on about 60 years ago.
