Charter Arms Bulldog - Sight Questions

For carry, absolutely go with the 2 1/2" fixed sight model. Stick with the 200 gr. Gold Dots.

And, there is nothing you can shoot out of a Bulldog all day. It bites and barks and snaps too much.

Don't touch those sights.

It's a beast that takes a lot of practice to master. Be patient. It's worth it.

LOL that paints a great mental image Moxie :)

Yeah, CWKahrFan, I checked out Buds. Price at the bigger dealer in the city will run about the same after considering transfer fee. They have quite a few of them, so I'll be able to pick out one that's absolutely right. - - Thanks

I don't want to come across as rude, but there are a few other similar choices out there. Here's a pic of my Taurus Total Titanium snub nosed revolver chambered in .45 Colt...

“I'm looking forward to hearing how Charter Arms treats Seaman. “ [Pointshoot]

No reply and no part received in the mail.

I really like the look and feel of the CA 44 and when I saw a Seller with last one NIB for $314, I figured I’d bite, but told myself this was an experiment and I would spend no additional dollars on long distance phone calls (CA has no 1-800 service) or return shipping costs to the factory. When I check a new acquisition out, if it doesn’t shoot a sub-1” group, on the first cylinder or mag, I sell it.

But I like the CA 44 so much I decided to give it another go at the range. Painted a tiny horizontal line on the front site, fluffed and buffed the hand (the part that rotates the cylinder, it had some metal flaking).

Shot 4 cylinders (20 rounds) thru it, had 2 jams, on the 1st I just pulled h-a-r-d-e-r and it did go boom. One the 2nd jam I rotated the cylinder by hand (with my free hand) and it worked. But the groups were 2-3”… got slowly p*ss*d off, reloaded, gripped the gun tightly and fired 5 more … guess what? A ¾ “ group. That was the problem … I was holding the gun in too relaxed a manner, all I had to do was firm up the grip. Shot 30 more rounds, no jams. Pleasant shooter … I shoot 357 mag, 45 ACP, 44 mag, S&W 460, etc, so the 44 spl is a mild treat. Still tight and solid.

Well, I checked Numrich’s for a replacement part, cheaper than sending the gun back, but they are out of stock.

Nice revolver, but I’m not certain I want to deal with Taurus CS dept either, don’t speak Portuguese, (btw Taurus also make a nice 44 spl) and would have to buy 45 Colt brass too, not sure if my 45 ACP reloading equipment would work. Reload another caliber … life is too busy.

Seaman - - - thanks for the report. I like to hear from people who have had problems more than those who haven't - - the information can be more useful.

Hmmm 3/4" groups -that'll definitely work for defensive use.

The modest price makes this one that's worth it to me to try out. I could even 'justify' it to myself as a lightweight/compact poisonous snake gun. Just load it up with 44 Special CCI shotshells.

If I ever have problems, I'll give them a call. Might even end up talking to the company ownership, from what I hear.

My .44Spec Bulldog (fixed sight) shoots a bit high with 200g bullets and higher with 240g bullets. so front sight has to stay as is :) . But that I can deal with. I did have to file my rear sight a bit to open it up as it shot way right. Now I can ding the steel out at 77 yards with mine... so should be good for the less than 25Y encounters... BTW, there is no way I could get 3/4" groups at the standard 25Y accuracy check offhand with mine. Nailing the paper plate every-time is good enough for me for this little gun :) . YMMV, but I sure like mine for what I use it for.

Note I never ever shoot factory loads, so the loads above are standard SAMMI loads using Unique under the lead bullets.

problems?

Seaman - - - thanks for the report. I like to hear from people who have had problems more than those who haven't - - the information can be more useful.

I bought my first Charter, a new Bulldog 44 spl, in Jan 2012. Dumped it in April 2012. Locked up tight three times on first outing....maybe 20 rounds. Back to Charter for new cylinder.

Fired five rounds with no problem. Then, I inadvertently loaded and fired five rounds of 44 MAGNUM, dropped right in, no shoulder to stop case. (fortunately they were hand loads at 44 Spl specs). Back to Charter for second new cylinder.

Took it to range to test with 200g Win 44 Spl ammo...third round locked up tight. Back to Charter for third new cylinder.

Took gun out of box fresh from Charter...dry fired and it locked up tight afer third click. Back to dealer for full refund.

Dealer sent gun to Charter and they sent him a new gun...still for sale at his shop.

I love 44 specials, I have several, and I bought the Bulldog because it was smaller than my S&W 396NG and I liked the size and feel of it but the quality of the gun sucks. I will never buy another Charter anything.
