The gas settings on the Stg-58 go from 1 (most gas used to cycle the action) to 7 (least used). There is a good description of this in Gunplumber's FAL workbook at the Arizona Response Systems web site.
The lower the gas regulator number, the harder your brass should be ejected (and the more beating your rifle takes). At least, that's the way I understand it.
