CCW Weight, What's Your Limit?

Hello All,

What do you consider to light or to heavy for CCW? Since I have got back in the game I've carried a 239, pretty heavy at around 30oz's loaded. Recently I picked up a CW9 and have been carrying it for the last week. Today I put on the 239 and was wondering how I used to do it. The 239 is about as heavy as I can go for CCW and the 342 is as lite as I can go for CCW, factoring in shoot-ability.

Depends on what I'm wearing.

With a heavy belt, I routinely carry a CZ75B or GP100 if in a full sized mood, or a CZ75D PCR (now) or P239 if in a compact mood, although sometimes I'll carry a P220 if in a .45 mood.

Partly it depends on what ammo has been available for me to practice with most recently. I like to stay current (within a week or 2) with whatever I'm carrying.

If in extreme southern summer weather, then I might be dressed in a way that limits me to an LCR, a speed strip or two, and a pocket folder.

Cheers,

M

The 239 is my every day carry piece. I don't have a problem with the weight. I think HOW you carry (ie good gun belt, holster type) can offset a lot of the weight issue.

I have a sturdy belt and a Galco IWB that works well for my 239. I don't think the same setup would work that great for a heavier gun though.

My Steyr S40 weighs 25 oz empty. My Springfield XD40
SC weighs 26 oz. I can carry either all day and not know it. The belt/holster system makes the difference.

I carry my 239 the same way. I'm not saying it isn't comfortable but there are times I wish it was a lighter gun. When my girlfriend and I take long walks through the city on a hot day and carrying IWB, I start to notice it. In the winter, in a paddle holster I forget its even there. However, it all comes down to shoot-ability and the weight makes a world of difference in follow up shots.

I'm carrying a gun Ruger lists at 43oz, daily without fail. And that's without ammo. Modified fanny pack.

I really believe fanny pack's are ideal but I just can't bring myself to wear one. Maybe one day I won't be such a pretentious jerk, until then I'll deprive myself of what might be the best carry solution.

I carry a commander 1911 at 35 oz. unloaded. A Beltman belt and a Mitch Rosen holster and I have no issues with the weight. Great carry.

Heaviest I routinely carry concealed is my Ruger P345.

Heaviest I routinely open carry (woods gun) is a 4" Ruger GP100.

My more regular carry guns rotate between a 2.25" Ruger SP101, a Ruger LCR, and a Ruger LCP

See a pattern there? :D.

I've recently discovered the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. Makes a dandy "man bag" and has a zippered compartment for concealed carry. I don't carry it every day but it comes in handy at times. My wife likes to call it my "man purse". :D.

Jim March, you are one of my "Go To Guys"...I occasionally quote you. I almost completely value your opinion....but:

Rantingredneck,

You gotta post a pic of this thing..

When I am planning on walkin' the streets of Portland at night here's what I carry:

SA XD40 subcompact with 2 extra clips

S&W 640 .357 magnum with two speedstrips

.25 caliber Raven semi-auto with a spare clip

For just day to day I only carry my SA XD40. Durin' the colder months I commonly carry my SA 1911-A1, and my 640 on my ankle.

I slapped a peace sign on it front and center. Despite being frickin' enormous, the Dems and Liberals I hang out with never catch on, except a few of 'em are in on the really horrendous pun involved.

It's where I keep my "piece/peace"...

Somewhere between 32oz. and 40oz. The former I can carry comfortably and conceal under some garments. The latter is enough heavier that it becomes an issue, both in terms of comfort and in terms of continually hitching my pants up unobtrusively. By the time the belt is tight enough to prevent that it's so tight that my back starts bothering me.

My normal carry pistol is somewhere around 20oz. loaded.

I have no issues with a Springfield TRP 1911. It's a full size, all steel 1911. I use Beltman belt and a Galco holster and with a proper loose fitting shirt, the gun is a snap to use as a CCW.

Sure thing........

I bought this about a month ago after a hiking trip. I had used an old backpack of mine as a daypack and it failed miserably in that application. Killed my shoulders by the end of the day as it didn't distribute weight very well and just wasn't comfortable. I asked around about sling packs as I used one years ago when I lived up in the mountains (and pretty much lived on the Appalachian Trail). The one I had then eventually came apart beyond my ability to put it back together. Fastforward to today and we have Maxpedition.....

They make a dedicated holster unit that velcros into the rear CCW compartment to hold your gun. I've found, though that my crossbreed supertuck for my P345 slots in nicely and stays in when I draw the gun so that's what I've used so far. Eventually I'm going to get something that will hold my 4" GP100 in here. Probably one of Maxpeditions universal holster units. Unless I make something myself for it.

So far this things been on a couple of fishing trips and a day trip to the beach. I'll probably use it for my "possibles" bag when hunting this fall too.

I apologize for the crappy cell phone pics but I can't locate my camera charger at the moment.
