CCW the waiting....

I'm part of the 90,000 applicant backlog in Florida and am getting closer.

I submitted my app on Dec 26, as my new year's resolution was to finally get around to getting it.

Check cashed on Feb 3rd, and now they say it's 90 days from that point, which seems contrary to the law, but I'm no lawyer.

The odd thing is I made it 42 years without it, put off the class year after year, and got around to it at the worst possible time, and my action had nothing to do with the new administration.

I've already called to check my status knowing that it will take over the 90 days and seem to be staring at my mailbox like a 16 year old waiting for his 17th birthday to come so he can drive. Very odd indeed....

it looks like florida is in the position texas was in months ago.... huge back log. I just sent my texas in as well.........now the waiting begins.

Good luck. I sent in my app in Oct. '08 and got my license last month. I can only imagine it's gotten worse. I have heard tell that they've hired more personnel to deal with the backlog. There's a phone number on the Department of Agriculture and Licensing website you can call to check on progress.

What part of Florida are you in?

I got mt Texas CHL last year after a 120 day wait. We were told they were required by law to issue within 60 days. My guess is that it's another unenforcable statute.

Good luck!

Yes it took me about 120 days to get mine. It seems a big backlog started about November 4 08....not sure why, but it did.

man that is rough i would go crazy waiting that long, not to showboat but in wa here i got my permit in 4 days.....how ever my roomate got his in 45 minutes. he went with me to pick up mine and decided to apply while we were there as well. clerk just told him to have a seat it shouldn't take too long... made me feel like a criminal taking four days to clear. but be patient it's worth the wait.:D

Wow! That's a serious backlog...

I got mine back in 2007. It took less than a month from the time I took the class to get my separate CCW licence.

I know this is just too practical... but for an example

Florida has 90,000 applications back logged.... at $117 each that comes out to... 10.5 MILLION DOLLARS!... you'd think they could hire a few extra folks to handle the back log... Hell they could build a new anex on the Dept of Ag building for that.

Wow, yeah, I'd go nuts waiting that long.

I hade mine in PA in 2 days.

And $117!! You're right blume, seems like they could get some help on this one. Why is it so expensive? Not bragging (I feel for you) but mine was like $19 and 2 days!

Me too! Except I'm only 33. I finally got around to getting mine last August. They told me 2-3 months and it took almost 5. Our county normally processes 25-30 applications a month and they were getting 90+ during that time.

Really!? It cost less than $20 to get your CCW in PA!? I am jealous... If I remember right I paid over $100 for mine here in MO.

BTW, Tom Petty said it best... "The waiting is the hardest part" :)

Yep. Really.
In fact, I had my fiancee' get hers on the same day.

Here's how it went down:
Saturday morning, I say to my fiancee' "Hey honey, let's go get our carry permits. It'll be my treat!"
She says "Ok, cool. What do we have to do?"
I say "I don't know, the internet says I should go to the sheriffs office".

So we go to the sheriffs office and ask the nice man there what we need to do to get a license to carry a firearm. He gives us each a form and we fill it out and hand it in with $19 each. He tells us we'll be seeing a postcard in the mail in a few days.
Wednesday, a blue postcard comes in the mail. It has two check boxes on it. One says "Sorry..blah blah blah." The other one (the one that was checked on both or ours) says "Return to the sherriffs office, your permits are ready to be picked up".
We returned thursday morning, they took our pictures and we were handed our permits.
We walked out the door, and my fiancee is still looking at hers. She says to me "What is this thing for, again?" :D
I explain, and she says "Ooohhh, I get it. So that's why you told me to check "self defense" on the application! That makes more sense now."

No joke.

I'm actually a bit ashamed to tell you that I got mine the next day. My family has done work for the Sheriff's department for the past 35 years, my dad has sold firearms to them for a very long time and most of the older deputy's watched me and my sister grow up.
The family name was enough to put me through. I was certified by my dad, but I can tell you he's definitely the toughest carry teacher in the state, and I wasn't treated any differently than anyone else he qualifies.

I have to ask you, Protectedbyglock and anyone else, don't you have to be either certified otr qualified before getting your carry permit where you are?

In NY it varies by county. Technically there is no "certification" or "qualification" in almost all areas. Some counties require a class, which amounts to little more than a hunter safety course. Others require little more than a pulse. It appears to be a mute issue. I have never heard of a problem with a permit holder in the entire state.
