CCW? Sell Your .380 and Get a Kahr MK9

Re Manual safeties on Khars.
I think it is stupid. The Kahr MK9 is just fine the way it is. However, the state of Mass. (yeah, them again!! ) might just have made it a moot point. A company cannot justify making a production change to fit just one small market. Like or not, the rest of us will be buying "Mass legal" guns real soon now!!!

Hann,
"Mass Legal" is my term for "special" guns that are now legal for the poor souls in the State of Massachusetts to own.

I'm on the verge of purchasing an MK40 or MK9 but a few folks a while back posted about rust problems. Any of you fellas have a problem with rust? At present, that concern is all that's between me and a nice piece of American-made 'stainless'.

Piggy:

Been there, done that. I was concerned about the same issue and called Kahr about it prior to recently purchasing my Kahr Elite98. They responded to me that the problem was identifed long ago as; "lamination problem in the heat treating process"??, and has long been since corrected.

Go get it!. The quality and workmanship of the Kahr postol will suprise you.

Hann

Piggy, with regard to rust:

My MK9 is less than a year old and it has rust in a number of places already (especially around the nightsights) -- so this problem may have not been properly corrected (or it was just sitting on the dealer shelf for a while before I bought it.

FUD,

I was concerned myself, so I called a technican at Kahr and gave him the serial number of my Gun (for the very reason I did't know the production date) and he confirmed that that problem was fixed prior to my serial number. Now you have me parinoid, just wiped down my entire Gun with CLP for the second time this week!

Also check this out regarding manual safties on Glocks, thought you might find it interesting with LEA's regulations on manual safeties.

Hann, admit it: you were just looking for another excuse to "wipe down" your piece.

"It's mine and I can lube it as often and as fast as I want to!"

Ok Buzz,

You got me. Exessive compulsive? boarderline.... The questions is how much do you lube your gun. Last time I shot it, I had CLP spraying out all over the place. I soaked the entire gun in a thick coat of CPL with a tooth brush and then wiped it down extensivly and there was still way to much CLP coming out of all parts of the gun when I fired it.

The only objection with the MK9, the screws come loose after shooting a few hundred rounds. Just tried some Gun-Tite (Green Bottle) on the threads of the screws. I hope that keeps them put for a while.

Hann

Hann:

That's why I now use a dry lubricant:

Regarding the screws, are you talking about the grip screws? I did lose one, but in general they seem to stay pretty tight. I just tighten them now and again. Don't think I would want to loctite them, because I remove the grip panels now and again to do a more thorough cleaning.

Jared,

Thanks for the advise on Lube. I was way over lubing entire gun. Funny, the instructor CCW class told us all that; "statistics show us that you folks are cleaning your guns way, way too much. It should only take 10 min., a little bit of solvent with a toothbrush and a light coating of oil on the slide rails and your good to go, they will outlast our children's children." I spend a half hour on the dammed thing. I just can't help it, I'm detailed orientated, what can I say.

The Uncle Mikes packages and OEM brand of Loctite called Gun-Tite. In the green package #1631-0. I called a Kahr technician and talked to 2 gun smiths and they all recommended a drop on the thread of each screw. With this brand of Loctite, screws can be removed with and ordinary screwdriver.

DO NOT use the Red or Blue formulations of Loctite you can find at any hardware store. They will be on there permanently and will never come off. Also, remove the magazine when/if you use the loctite so it won't get on the magazine. Let it dry for a couple of hours and your good to go.

Regards,
Don

Ah, that makes sense. I forgot about the zillion different varieties of locktite. I was thinking you were using the red version.
