I could see in a .380 acp or less powerful, to used FMJs in cold climate's seem logical IMHO for a low velocity light bullet.

At least if I carried a .380, I'd use the .380 fmj against heavy clothed BGs.

"In my CCW 45 Colt I chamber different rounds in the summer & winter.
My reason is that an assailant or intruder would likely be more heavily
clothed in the winter hence greater need for penetration....."

Don't ya' have to also adjust for the "big badguy" vs. "small badguy" scenario's?
:D

IMO changing ammo between seasons makes sense to me in the midwest.

If I just look at the Winchester Ranger “T” series, the RA9124TP – 9mm +P 124gr might be something I want to use in winter – penetrating to around 13.9” in 4 layers of denim and expanding to .67”, but in bare gelatin it only penetrates to 12.2”

The RA9B – 9mm Bonded 147gr might be something I use in summer, penetrating to 14.7 in bare gelatin, and expanding to .62” But it has penetration of 16.5” in 4 layers denim - a bit much I think and I personally want to see bullet characteristics that hover round 14" penetration.

In this case it would make sense to me to carry the +P 124gr in cold weather and the Bonded 147gr in warm weather.

I’m sure looking at a wider range of ammo can lead to more optimization… but in general it does seem to make sense to me.

I carry Winchester Ranger 147gr Bonded 9mm. I don't plan on changing with the weather. Even through heavy cloth and denim it is shown to penetrate 15"+. I have personally tested it in water and my numbers pretty much match Winchester's.

I even shot one through the front half of a cinderblock. The bullet passed through a 3" jug of water before hitting the back half and richocheting back in to the jug. To me that shows the bullet can still be lethal in some pretty extreme situations.

I don't think that any normal winter clothing is going to stop the bullet. The only type of clothing that concerns me is a motorcycle jacket. I don't mean the typical leather jacket. I am talking about the Moto GP type jackets with carbon fiber, kevlar, or metal pads in them. It is so rare to see those around here that it probably isn't a real concern.

In my area the guys who wear the Moto cycle jackets are busy doing inverse wheelies at 60mph on the freeway. They already have a ton of money as evidenced by their cycles and their gear and they're too busy stunt riding to rob people or break into houses.

Are you talking about the Polish wheelie? I never heard of an inverse wheelie before.:D

In Chicago they should call it the franchise flusher wheelie.

Our number 1 NBA draft choice Jason WIlliams was doing one when he cracked up and ended his basketball career.

Winter time when heavy clothing and thick leather jackets are worn....For those that carry .380 Pistols.
The Federal Hydra Shok .380 JHP is good enough.

Out here in Aleutian Hell there's little difference between summer and winter. Summer is green, cool, wet and windy.
Winter is brown, cold, wet and windy.

Chances are at any given time miscreants will be wearing Grundens over Carhartts.

180 gr Speer Gold Dots for the win.

Hard cast heavy SWC with flat point both summer and winter. I have seen enough JHP cavities plug up and act just like ball, although newer designs are much better than they used to be. Elmer Keith knew what he was talking about. Big hole going in - big hole going out.

This will be my first winter CCWing. I currently am carrying a 115 grain bullet but plan to upgrade to 147 grain come Nov when I am carrying my 9mm. When carrying my .45 I always carry 230 grains.
