CCI Pest Control Shotgun Shell

I've loaded the Speer casules with #8 and #9 for .44 and 38/357 for years. They work great at close range, especially 10' or less. I used to load a couple hundred at a time for friend who took them to Texas for snake hunting. We both were shooting the 38/357 ones from 6" Rugers. The maller the shot, the more pellets you get. #9 worked better than #8. I never bothered loading anything bigger. Also, they patter better at lower velocities so don't overload. Never heard of the blue caps coming apart or sticking. Never experienced any problems with with the ones I loaded, maybe 1000 total in both calibers.

Not much defense value with their limited range, though I suppose the bigger capsules with a 1/4 oz of shot might be good anti-carjacking load, but I'd rather have a single slug.

I load #8 in Speer shot shells for a J frame. Out of a snubby I've measured about one inch pattern for every foot of range. The longer barreled guns tend to "doughnut" the pattern.

The pattern spread depends primarily on twist rate & velocity.

A faster twist rate & a higher velocity will open the pattern up quicker.

The Python & Detective Special I tested them with both spread faster than comparable Smiths, different twist rates between the two brands.

One of the best in terms of density & tighter spreads was a Smith .38 snub.
Short barrel, lower velocities.

The worst were rifles, higher velocities.

Never heard of a plastic CCI shot cup getting stuck in a barrel.
I did bust one up trying it in a 9mm Glock.
Hit the feedramp & shattered, poured little tiny lead pellets all over inside the gun.

Some pistols don't tolerate them well at all.

I was reading another site where someone was using the Speer capsules and loading two #5110 Speer .350, 64 grain round balls, with a felt wad underneath to fill any extra space.

He didn't say what powder charge he used, but it was mild, and he claimed decent accuracy to about 30 yds with enough power to kill coons

As far as defense they would be pretty poor. My Uncle had a Red Brangus that was a fence destroying Bugger! One day I caught him in the act and let him have it twice with 2 rounds of CCI 38spl snake shot in the hip. I think the blast did more to disrupt his efforts than the shot did from about 10-15 yds. If he would have had fingers I'm sure he would have given me the middle one as he strolled off! Another time the same thing went down, but this time at about 25yds I had an old Stevens pump 410. I'm pretty sure it had 3" # 6 shells in it, I think that bull would have passed up the Road Runner after he shifted it into overdrive! :DFrom then on all he had to do was see me get out of the truck and he would high tail it, no comparison between the two rounds.

How many people would chose a 410 for SD, I wouldn't but Old Red sure rated it much higher than the 38 snake load.;)
