CCI .22 pest control round

My friend it may be time for the precision air gun solution, especially the compressed air powered version, you will never regret it. Last winter I dropped 65 of the little SOB's off my bird feeder, tails for fly tying and kept my red fox little buddy well fed for the season.

Eurasian Collared Doves are considered an invasive species here, and love my back yard. I try to do my part in taking care of the problem. But...

I am surrounded by houses, and can't discharge a firearm without permission from all of the home owners within 600 feet (which I won't get). So, I turn to the old Daisy 880 pellet rifle.

Being a multi-pump design is annoying, but it's more accurate than comparable brake-barrel rifles. And, for about $50, it does everything I would ask of even a $1,000 rifle.

With pellets, it is only rated for about 635 fps, but it still punches clean through the doves at 20 yards. The model designation of "880" comes from being rated for 880 fps with BBs. But, we all know how accurate steel BBs are, even from a rifled barrel...
One of these days, I'll order some BB lead shot, and see how they do for accuracy and velocity out of the Daisy.

I have to admit, though: I couldn't stand the 10 cent "scope" that came with the rifle. I spent a whopping $9 on new rings, and tossed an old 4x Bushnell Sportview on the rifle. It made all the difference. ;)

I'll second the Gamo. If you can't shoot them at all, my aunt has a nice solution. You bury a bucket about halfway in the ground and fill it with water up to about five inches from the top. Spread seed on top so it floats. Squirrels go in but can't get out. Only problem is that you have to deal with disposing of drowned rodents.

I have a solution for now

Well I was cleaning the garage out to build a bench for my reloading press and I came across my old red Ryder from years back. Guess what, the damn thing still worked. Went out and got some bb's for it and it's taking care of those pesky critters now. I've taken 8 bushy tails in 2 days. The little gator that's made my pond in the backyard his home is loving me. Don't worry, I won't have a gator problem, the little guys only stay there for about a month at the longest before they leave.

I am glad I didn't check here first

This thread was located while looking for options to the .22 CCI shotshell option. But - I shot two depredating rats in my yard in the past few days using the .22 CCI pest control round. My first choice was the pellet gun, but found that my pellet supply was gone.

I just want to say that the critters were good sized - as rats go, not your New York City cat-sized sewer rats but sort of normal good sized adult rats. The .22 CCI shotshells worked just fine. Killed the beasts graveyard dead. Range - about 10 - 12 feet.

I don't think that while night-hunting rats, the range need be much farther. I was satisfied that these rounds will do what my rat-hunting requirements call for.

The ones that left after a month - were you feeding them squirrels on a regular basis?

The range of 22 shot can be expanded considerably by using a 22 smoothbore. I have one, a bolt action BSA, and it shoots a decent pattern at 10 yards - about three times as far as from a rifled barrel. However, the shot is still #12, so don't expect too much.
