CCI .22 pest control round

Has anyone used this stuff. Just curious as to how affective it is.
Have a major squirrel problem. I got that new AT&T uverse for tv now
And the squirrels keep chewing through the wires on the telephone pole and screwing with my tv. I can't shoot a normal .22 in the air around where I live cause of surrounding homes but the rat shot wouldn't be a problem to shoot here. Would a round of that keep a decent enough pattern and have enough penetration to take a squirrel out. I'd be shooting from the ground to the height of the telephone pole. All the properties out here is 20 acres of farmland each, so no worries of the pellets traveling to to the next house over.

Nope

Ya know how it can feel like a squirrel is laughing at you??
The "rat shot" .22 rounds are only effective a few feet away. They work well for snakes when they are near your feet.
BB caps are pretty effective tho. Quiet too.

Are you worried about the sound or the projectile?

If its sound your concerned about, pellet gun would be the way to go. My Talon SS drops tree rats out to 80 yards or so. CCI Has several "quiet loads" like their conical ball loads, but nothing compares to Aquila super colibris in the quiet department.

If you worried about the bullet itself........get a havaheart trap.
Even pellets travel hundreds of yards with enough energy to injure bystanders.

Are you sure that bird shot .22s are legal to discharge in your area? They still make the gunshot sound and my guess is that your second shot will be as the police drive up. Assuming that this is legal in your area, why not do a test? Set up a target, maybe sometthing from the kitchen, soda can or piece of fruit, and see what .22 bird shot will do at various distances.

Tree Rats

I live in suburbia. No weapons discharges allowed. I didn't need to stress out the neighbors or have the Police come by.

The wife put out some bird feeders, along with some beautiful birds came tree rats. Not content with bird seed they went to work on the plants and shrubs in the back yard. I tried non-lethal solutions, not good. Two neat holes in wire on the screened in back porch. When they chewed a hole in the drip board on the tool storage shed, built onto the back of the house, which was expensive to replace and repaint that was it.

I took the bird feeders down, went to Dicks Sporting Goods and obtained a .177 Cal Gamo Whisper Pellet Rifle and some 40 grain "hunting" pellets. It's a single shot pump, with a sound supressor on it. The only sound heard the spring recoil. I bagged 12 Tree Rats in less than a couple of weeks.

As stated, the CCI rat shot is worthless at more than a few feet...

For quiet 22, Aguila Super Colibri subsonics work for me...Just wait till the rat has a good backstop...

What Slowhand recommends. I got the same gun, a Gamo Whisper Recon to curtail an exploding population of chipmunks in my half-acre urban setting. Technically, even a pellet gun is prohibited here but the sound is barely audible. Slowhand's aim, btw, is much better than mine but I've gotten a few. One .177 caliber pellet is more than enough to do the job.

Super Colibri+++

Supposed to be only used in pistols length barrels. I have fired them in 20" barrel with no issues. I would double check for an obstructed bore tho. These rounds are really "no worse" than a pellet gun with regard to safety. They are also about the same noise level as a potent pellet gun.
Guess it all depends on the local laws, the Super Colibri's I am sure would still be defined as a firearm.
You may be legal with the Gamo rifle mentioned earlier, and illegal with the Super Colibri's.

The Aguila 'Colibri are rated at 375fps...

The Aguila 'Super Colibri' are rated at 500fps...

Neither will cycle an auto loader...

The OP has not stated that it is illegal to discharge a weapon, just that it is imprudent to fire in the air with a .22, and I agree with him...

rat shot is useless, as others have stated. I really think the super colibri is the way to go. out of a rifle they are usually quieter than a quality, high velocity air rifle. they are much quieter than my Sheridan. I really think these are your best bet. I used to shoot squirrels with the super colibris in my yard 1 block away from a former U.S. President's home without problems. probably isn't legal to shoot an air rifle in the city limits where you are either. Be smart, be safe, and nobody will care because they won't know.

In humble opinion the rat shot doesn't even work all that well for rats. After an explosion of roof rats in the shed here, I was on the hunt. With the LR loads, 15 feet was really pushing it. With 22 WMR loads and a 9.5 inch Single Six, I could get by with 25-30 feet and the lucky pellet theory. With the donut pattern shape, if I aimed at the rump area, I'd get a pretty good bunch of the pellets up around the head. Neither option is terribly quiet though. I would be inclined to go the colibri or airgun route the next time.

Slowhand's solution seems to be the best idea to me...if you have neighbors close by and are not allowed to use a firearm in city limits...that should keep them happy and the police are not likely to bother you as well...ya gotta stay within the limits of the law. CB .22's are another answer, quiet, maybe as quiet as that pellet gun, and reasonably accurate...the Long ones will stay in an inch at 50' from my Winchester 61 scoped pump and will do damage if I hit right. Head shots would be the choice, tho they do nicely against starlings here in KY. Best Regards, Rodfac

I live on a few acres and hunt squirrel on the regular basis. The bird shot loads are worthless past 8 feet. Your best bet for suburb hunting is one of 2 choices. Either CCI cb shorts , which tend to shoot through the squirrel but are quieter than a single pump pellet gun. Or Remington Cbee's. Which are a little louder but do not over penetrate like the CCI cb's. If you wait till a squirrel is on a tree or pole you should be fine as it will be an adequate backstop provided your aim is good.

Colibris are the pistol-only rounds....Super Colibris are OK for rifle use....

I second the air rifle idea....cheaper than rimfire rounds & less likely to get you in hot water with the law & the neighbors....

Remember.....the Four Rules also apply to airguns....

I would really like a pellet gun but my wife is so animal friendly that sniping a squirrel would put me in the dog house for sure. ("Those poor animals are only looking for something to eat" she says) Now, my son, a Captain in the Air Force, still has his pump BB gun in my basement. I wonder if stinging them with BBs will still cause havoc with the queen of the house. Might do wonders on the neighbors cat too. :D

Small live trap with some corn? Good ol fasioned rat trap screwed to the pole with some peanut butter for bait? 110 conibear with bait in a cubby box (even cardboard would work)?

Lot's of options that don't require the cost of a new gun, are for the most part silent and work even when you're not home.
