CBS's 60 Minutes on the 50BMG chambered rifle

Did any one notice that Police Comissioner Kelly from NYC told people "see the bullets passed right through" and clearly two of the three shots stuck in the plate? And the camera work did not clearly that the third shot went through either. The entire piece gave not one clear piece of evidence that these were ever used in the commission of a crime. The only possible link to a crime was the Waco killings and we all know how guilty all those people were.

If the Slap rounds and the HE rounds made in Norway are Illegal and being sold on the Internet, why didn't CBS make a note that they had forwarded that information to the ATF ?

More airliners have been crashed and crippled by seagulls than by .50 cal projectiles. End the madness now. No one needs a seagull for sporting purposes.

terrorist will probably still take a box cutter over a .50 bmg. same effect for bringing down a plane, they get to be a marytr with the box cutter, its lighter, cheaper, and you dont have to call the fbi for a background check to purchase it.

Actually, all three did penetrate, at least partially. I recorded the episode and have watched this segment several times. There is a view from the back that is about 2 seconds. Light is passing through all 3 impacts of the steel by the .50 cal. Two were poor performers as the holes were quite irregular and dimmutive with probably only shatter passing through.

Here I would like to point out something of interest. While they were testing with 1/2" thick steel plates and apparently NOT using AP ammo for the .308 or the .50 cal, the steel they were using was not armor steel as described. My guess is that they were using 1/2" thick construction steel as is used to cover pavement work when holes have to be cut into the pavement and repairs effected that might take place over several days. So instead of completely closing a road, the cover their work with steel plate so that traffic can continue over the hole when they are not working there. It is durable to the type of stress for which it is used because it is not extremely hard steel. Armor steel is harder steel.

I shoot 500 Brinnell steel targets from MGM that are 1/4" thick. 500 Brinnell is what you want for armor. .308rounds at 100 yards DO NOT make divots in the armor steel that you saw with the 1/2" steel shot by the folks in New York. At 100 yards, even at 75, you get some surface deformation, but nothing of consequence. Heck, singular shots with .50 BMG Talon ammo produce dents in the targets, but don't penetrate until after numerous shots have landed on the same place of the steel, finally causing it to fail.

I don't know if the news program intentionally used softer steel or not. My guess is that a lot of the people involved in the test should have known, but may not have known. Note that they did NOT have Ronnie Barrett there to comment on the test or steel quality.

Double Naught Spy:

Kelly is another of those Police Bureaucrats, a political appointee with his nose up the behind of his appointer, from whom he takes direction.

As for the shooting performance of that "Police Sharpshooter" or Police Marksman" re his firing of what I assume was a Match Grade Bolt Rifle firing the .308 Winchester round, scope sighted, from a bench rest position, one poster, as I recall, claimed he missed the steel plate with one shot. Actually he didn't, and I taped the segment, however re the shooting display from a trained officer, note the following. I used to shoot National Mastch Course using among other rifles, a Model 70 Standard Target Rifle chambered for the .308 round. Firing my own handloads, with IRON SIGHTS, in the 300 yard RAPID FIRE STAGE, 10 rounds prone from standing in 70 seconds, using a sling with my elbows in the grass for support, I shot much better groups and I shot them a lot faster. I was also using a right handed rifle, fired from the left shoulder. As I recall, the aiming point was 13" in diameter, smaller than what the officer was shooting at. By the way, I wasn't all that great a shot either. I was fired Expert when I quit rifle competition, 2 grades below the top. Above me were Master and High Master shooters.

Obviously, this has nothing much to do with the 50 caliber rifle, however when next you hear some police bureaucrat running his or her mouth about weaponry, or shooting ability, take a moment to remember the foregoing, or talk with someone who shoots National Match Course Competition, using 30 caliber rifles. By the way, from some of the foolishness I've seen displayed with handguns, by police officers, they are a menace to both themselves and to the citizenry.

Que?

You know alan, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I quoted guntotin_fool who claimed shots from the .50 didn't penetrate. He quoted Kelley as saying they did penetrate and hence was saying Kelley was in error or lied.

I have no idea why you felt it necessary to tell me Kelley was a beaurocrat or that you were a National whatever shooter. That Kelley was a beaurocrat was obvious. Your credentials, don't seem to have any bearing on the correction that all three .50 cal shots penetrated the steel, at least partially. It does not matter who was pulling the trigger or what their credentials were. The shots hit the target and performed appropriately. I made no comments on anyone's shooting ability.

Pardon the rant. It must have been late and or I was tired when I wrote it.

Otherwise, perhaps I simply get tired of hearing all about how police personnel are so "all knowing", as some would have it, veritable founts of knowledge on all manner of things.

Actually, I was speaking of the guy's shooting with what I assume, perhaps incorrectly, was a 308 caliber rifle.
