Case Head Expansion

Measuring accurately at .0015? With what equipment? How many of you guys have equipment and sufficient technique capable of repeatedly measuring in that range? Repeatedly is the operative word.

Sometimes I have to scratch my head and wonder

I had an electronic gage that measured down to .000005”. That was annoying so I removed the electronics and then installed a dial indicator. When it comes to measuring and comparing there is a dial indicator for every use. Then there were the good old days. The chamber for the M1 Garand was not the same chamber as the Springfield 03. The M1 Chamber was larger in diameter at the rear by .00023 +/-. I am told they did not have the equipment in the good old days to maintain tolerances that were that close.
Before I attended finish school I responded with BS. In finishing school I learned to respond with ‘FANTASTIC’.

jmorris: Nice tools. I have them as well, have been using them for half a century. But how many people on this forum know how to use the vernier scale on the mic barrel to get that 10th?

My point was that measuring the case is neither reliable nor meaningful unless you are tooled, and experienced in their use.

Thank you jmorris, I have been machining for 40 yrs and that is a nice 0-24 set. Other than that I have most of what you pictured.

Many of us really CAN measure things...

I have tools, when determining case head expansion a reloader should consider the die. I have case heads that fit into the base of the die when turned around case head first before firing. After firing the case head expanded to the point the case head was larger in diameter than the die.

Then there are those dies that start out smaller in diameter. Some reloadrs call them small base dies, I refer to them as mistakes.

Mistakes, I have one set of 30/06 dies that want to keep ever case I shove into it.

That I don't know but I figure if they have a micrometer, they automatically have a better shot than the rest of the people in this world.

Sometimes I wonder what percentage of the population could make popcorn without a microwave these days.
