Carry while working out

I can carry my P-32 when I do almost anything. I have not found a way to carry while working out at the gym. Bench press, and such.
Any suggestions?

I'll second gunboy's suggestion (welcome to TFL gunboy :)) unless you do what I do. Aquire all your weight lifting equipment to work out at home.

I was promised a Shortycicle and I want a Shortycicle!

My NAA .22 mini-revolver came with an IWB holster; I carry that to the gym. It's so small and light that I put it inside my underwear waistband and just pull my sweatpants up over the grip. Totally concealed, easy access, negligible weight, out of the way and won't fall out.

If you want to carry something that makes bigger holes, consider the Kramer Leather deep-concealment shirt. It's a sleeveless undershirt with holsters under each armpit.

As you have seen -- many folks wear a walkman in a fanny pack sort of waterproff and padded sport case to the gym. You can carry your regular piece in the pack, no walkman, just some earphones and the wire, with the phones around your neck.

Get a Kydex neck holster for a NAA 22 or you can fit one with a quick release lanyard.

Of course, mouse guns as discussed here will be a world of use against Brutus Beefcake when he decides you are an unworthy wussy who must be removed from the gym.

Why carry in the gym? Realistic risk factor there or just general Condition Yellow everywhereness?

Barrett .50 Caliber semi-auto. In fact, you can probably skip the trip to the gym if you sling one of these on your hip.

Seriously, I think that the fight is not going to start in the gym but rather before or after. My choice would be a full-size 45 in your gym bag. Make sure it's Stainless. Other options are a lanyard around the neck, belly-band .22, or perhaps just a good telescoping club.

If you can wear a belt while working out, I've seen some belt buckles where the gun is part of them, they're really cool. Or get a pocket holster.

EnochGale-- Just always like to carry, and usually will be working out at night.
No high threat, but sometimes that is the logic people use right before they get thumped. With crime being so random, you just never know. Gunboy kinda hit it.

Gunslinger-- I wish I had the room!!
JodyHudson-- Great idea!

In fact, all great ideas.
Thank you!

Why carry in the gym?

The destination of a trip is rarely dangerous enough to require weapons at hand. It's the trip to and from where the risk is high.

And I'm NOT leaving my gun in a gym locker. Theft risk is too high.

Full gym in the house. Best room in the house. Of course, I live alone and based upon the comments of women that see my livingroom full of equipment, I will live alone for a long time.

I can see carry when running in the woods, but not in the gym. I once had a gym confrontation with Fred Flinstone's brother. Severe humbling before this young Turk took care of him. Of course, he thought that he had humiliated me, but I had avoided any injury so that I could continue to keep my office open. I was 6'3" and 230 pounds, but it just wasn't worth the risk.

There is also the shoulder holster for a Palm, pocket computer which has a pocket behind the pocket that the computer is in. Anyone asks; show the Palm! Perhaps not so good during exercise, but a plausable excuse for carrying and keeping with you... Gotta protect your computer you know.

There are a few others too.

If you don't want to leave a real gun in the locker, then the innocuous fanny pack is the way to go.

By the way, if you don't want to leave a gun in the locker, how do you shower at the gym or do you just smell on the way home?

:)

And, there's always Thunderwear.

Regarding risk in a gym .... children's day care centers don't seem very risky either.

Best advice I received when I first got my CCW was that you will not know when or where you will need to have a firearm. If you did, you would probably avoid that situation.

I know that I'd feel like a real schmuck if the one time in my life when I needed to defend myself and innocent others, I had conveniently left my CCW pistol in my car ...

Sometimes, you compromise. Being gray and middle aged maybe reduces the times one is called upon to "prove a point." I personally feel it is sometimes more dangerous to be obviously armed than to be unarmed. I read the comments about Thunderwear and Kramer T-shirt holsters, but--are we talking about a real workout? :) Maybe some places, guys wear REALLY baggy and bulky sweatshirts in the gym, but I can't remember any in north Texas. A true workout is a pretty sweaty situation in my experience.

Back when I worked out regularly, I kept a privately owned lock on the locker at the gym and never even HINTED that I might be carrying or leaving a pistol in the locker. I did consider doing the dork pack and headset maneuver but never got around to it. I guess I would go that route if I felt I just HAD to carry in the gym.

Another idea might be a mini-revolver or a baby Browning-sized .25 auto in a custom holster belted or taped WAY up high in the groin. Uncomfortable for some exercises, I'd imagine. I have, in fact, carried a stainless steel Bauer .25 in cutoff jeans while swimming in lakes and at beach. Most gyms don't want you to wear cutoffs, though.

You and your workout partner could take turns with the gym bag slung over the shoulder while working out. Then the .50 AE Desert Eagle would be really handy in case of trouble. :D

Do any of us ever go to the beach, or the water parks?

Best regards,
Johnny

How long ago was it that somebody was killed at the YMCA in Fargo? My fiancee works there, so I'm just a tad bit curious.

There's one guy at the gym (police officer) I go to that carries, in a BlackHawk fannypack, and it's pretty obvious. You can't do all your lifting with one on, so sometimes, you gotta lay it beside you. When he does this, he lays his pack down with tender loving care, as opposed to everyone else, who slings their keys, and even their CD players, onto the rubber matted floor.

I gotta go with Johnny Guest on this one... Spend your bucks on a BIG TIME dependable lock, and keep your piece SILENTLY in your gym bag. Never tell a SOUL that you carry it.

I've been in quite a few gyms, and never actually seen one where the regular patrons posed a real danger. The ticked off boyfriend that comes in to pop off a few rounds will only be firing at you if you're that "other guy".

I'm even surprised I said that, because I carry EVERYWHERE, but now that you bring it up, I don't carry at the gym.

take care, be safe.
