Carry in the home?

Let's just say I live in downtown Richmond, Virginia and the crack epidemic used to be worse than it is now. John

I am glad to read all these replies. Within five feet of me right now, I have an H&K USP .45 Tactical and a Ruger GP-100 .357 magnum. My wife HATES this, but I try to carry -- or to have at least one of my "primary" handguns within easy reach -- when I'm at home. I hope I never need any of this firepower, but I refuse to have my last thoughts be "if only …".

My carry gun, whatever I happening to be carrying that day, is on my hip all day and when I get home to the computersits right in front of me. When I go to sleep it goes right on my night stand, except the only difference is I take the bullet out of the chamber, but keep the clip in.

I got my Kahr P9 primarily as a pocket gun for the house. That's usually where it resides. Others are located in various places in different states of readiness.

It doesn't feel right checking out the gun forums without the trusty Sig on the table to share the fun.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean people AREN'T out to get me.

The P-32 is with me , also. Not sure why I started carrying in the house, I guess it just made sense to me.

This is going to make people think that I'm paranoid, but I don't care. If I have a gun, what do I have to be paranoid about?

From the time that I get up out of bed and get dressed, the gun goes on. It stays there all day, whether at home or out on the street. I take it off only when I go to bed.
But even then, its still within arms reach.

Thanks.

Seeing this thread reminded me to go get my fanny pack out of the bedroom now that I'm sitting in the computer room.

Regards to all,

I'm unarmed only when I'm asleep, in the shower or nude for...other reasons. ;) and even then a gun is within arm's reach.

The reason isn't so much paranoia- though I do live in a crappy neighborhood and I strongly agree with everyone who posted that its best to have the gun within reach at all times. But no, thats not the real reason.

What is the real reason?

I'm lazy, and I hate taking stuff off when I might have to put it on again later.

Sad but true.

Seriously, though...there are advanatages to carrying at home:

1. Robbers don't call ahead to make reservations to kick in your door.

2. If the gun is on you there is no worry about anyone else (read: a kid) getting it.

3. It gets you used to carrying.

4. You don't take time to go upstairs, secure the gun, go do something and then have to go upstairs again, put on the gun, and then leave.

5. Its just plain easier. I mean...you don't take off your pants upon returning home, do you? Or take off your watch? Why automatically shed your sidearm?

I am more-than-vaguely annoyed by the upswing of fake-police home invasions. I am a LEO and if I come through someone's door on a no-knock warrant (never done it- despite the hype, they **are** rare) I DAMNED well expect any law-abiding citizen to hit the dirt and not pull a gun on me...but by the same token, I am a law abiding citizen and if some guy comes flying through MY door yelling 'poleeece!'...I mean, did our SWAT team hit the wrong house, or is this a fake raid?

*shudder*

Great thread. Makes me want to get a CC handgun. I can only have one, and my USP 45f is a little big to carry everywhere. Soo... I have to go hold mine every couple hours or so or after seeing a good thread or a good firearm.

Be right back...

Coronach makes a lot of the points I would cite.

I'm actually fascinated by those people that put one on and take it off numerous times during the day.

I put it on in the morning, and I take it off and secure my pistol when I hit the sack. I don't have to worry about my child or some other person finding my firearm, it won't be stolen off my body, it is there if I need it, and I don't know when I'll need it.

From my perspective, it is the responsible thing to do ... keep it handy and secure.

When I get anti-self defense gun bigots telling me I'm 'paranoid' for carrying it all day, I simply ask them ... 'Would you want me to leave it on the desk? In my car where it can be stolen? At home, where I don't have it if I need it? Off my body, where a child could find it?'

I understand the wonder at carrying all day ... I used to wonder the same. Then, I got my CCW permit and began carrying. All the pragmatic issues then began to be clearer. It is simply safer and more responsible all around for me to carry from dawn to dusk.
