Carry in the home?

This morning, the local radio station was saying that there has been a recent upswing in home invasion type robberies in a specific area of Memphis. The masked BGs first step upon breaking the door in is to shoot anyone at home and then take what they want. I usually disarm myself when I get home putting my carry gun into a Gun Vault by my bed, but now I question that practice though I do not live in the area mentioned. How many of you carry in the home and do you carry the same gun in the home as on the street?

Around The house I always have a "mouse" in my pocket. Jetfire, NAA Mini, Guardian, P-32...etc
I had a friend who was murdered, it changed me.

Can't carry outside the house(legally  )here in OH. I do keep something handy (arms reach) at all times for the same reason mentioned. Rash of home invasions in NE OH lately. A couple with the BG yelling POLICE as they come in. Anyone kicking in my door will leave quickly, oneway or another ;). Another reason for staying armed, several large dogs and many kids in the area. Sometimes not the best mix. So whatever is handy is a major caliber.

Be careful what you ask for..You may get it.
An unloaded pistol is a paperweight.

I always have my V10 in its accustomed home: a Galco paddle on my right hip. As my computer desk is right by my door, and I spend most of my time on the puter, I don't want to have to run to the other end of the cottage if TSHTF.

In addition to having a gun in the bedroom, I have a couple of other guns throughout the house in hidden & locked (with a simplex lock for quick access in an emergency) strongboxes so that no matter what part of the house I'm in, an intruder will not be standing between me and my firearm. For example, if in order to get to your bedroom from the family room you have to walk past the front door and someone has just kicked in the front door ... you now have to get past the threat to get to your weapon. By having firearms secured in a few key locations, this problem is now resolved. Actually, [Link to invalid post] now has me seriuosly considering placing one of these in the bathroom as well.

That said, I do carry a firearm on me while at home. I got into the habit when I had to live with my in-laws for several months because our house was delayed in being built. Their house is pretty big (at least when compared to mine) and to get from one end to the other to reach a firearm would have taken longer then I would have felt comfortable with.

While at home, I carry a five shot Taurus 85UL/UC .38 special snubbie in an inside the waist belly band. Loaded, it weighs less than a pound. I strap it on when I first get up & forget about it and nobody even knows that I have it on. This is not a gun that I would normally arm myself with when leaving my house (I would normally carry eight rounds of 9mm in a S&W3913 or if the weather and my mode of dress permits, ten rounds of .40S&W in a S&W4013). However, around the house I figure that if those five .38 rounds don't stop somebody, they'll at least hold them off until I can get to one of my other firearms -- twelve rounds of .40SW or sixteen rounds of 9mm. This is not a resource that I would have available to me when away from home.

Some may consider it paranoid but I consider it being well prepared. If the doorbell rings I don't want to be worried about who it is? Does the person look suspious? Should I grab a gun first and hide it near the front door just in case? etc.? With the .38 special on my hip, I don't have to worry about these things because I know that I am armed and equipped to defend myself & my family should the situation arise.

I've got the P-32 on the computer desk even as we speak, the 45 is two steps away and the shotgun is in right down the hall. Oh yeah, the wife is hame sick, her 38 is in the bedroom with her.

Normally there is one within arm's reach. I normally don't have one on me per se, but I'll take it with me if I go to another room. I always have one next to me when I'm at the computer.

Paranoid? Not me, We live in a fairly rural setting, but there are two state correctional facilities, a state mental hospital and a two-county detention facility within four miles of the house. What would you do? ;)

I started carring in the house when I first got my license to help get me "used" to it. Now it just doesn't feel right to not carry.

W. F. McElhany, I'm not disagreeing with you at all. As a matter of fact, I think very much the way you do. I'm working from home today ... I have a .38 snubbie on my hip under my shirt and a .45 on the table within arm's reach. However, if you follow any of my other posts where I mention something like this, usually at least one person will bring up the "P" word (paranoid) -- I'm just glas to see that there are others who think the way that I do.

I don't necessarily "carry" in the house. But there is always loaded gun within easy reach. The dogs (Chows) would slow the BG long enough for me to reach one.

I sometimes worry about being slightly paranoid ,I have decided I am not because all of my newer friends now buy and carry guns since coming over to play. There is a Sig 220 on the refridgerator and a mossberg in my bed (im not married :), a guy gets lonely :D )being this is a 1 bedroom apt I figure I can get to one or the other quick enough. It makes me feel better to know they are there and that is what is most important.(along with not being a defenceless victim)

You are not paranoid if they really ARE out to get you. :D :D :D

My home office is where I do most of my "at home" stuff. There be more nooks and cranies to hide stuff than you can shake a stick at in that room. ;)

That said, I wear the Action Direct "belly band with straps" under my shirt all the time now in this Tx summer heat. There be a Kimber .45 or an STI 9mm under there (depends on the shirt) and nobody knows the better. :D

I occasionally carry in the house, but more often, there's always something in easy reach. I do answer the door with something in the waistband in the small of my back or in my back pocket. If it's a neighbor or one of my wife's friends, they never know. If it's a solicitor or proselytizer, they might catch a glimpse of something that helps them take "no thank you" for an answer the first time (Girl Scouts and Trick or Treaters are excluded, of course). AndaBeer,
About a year before I started my dependency on collecting handguns, I had attempted break-ins on our new house. (eight months after we moved in)...we had about 9 tries in 12 months. So when I check out our house, it is with gun in hand and I carry open carry on a belt rig while I am at home.
When guests are over, I carry concealed. Strong side on hip...iwb.

I felt paranoid at first and my kids joke about it. It took some time getting used to it. I can't carry legally outside my residence and my permit indicates to carry directly to the local range for practice.

I have my Mossberg within a couple of steps whenever I'm at home. It works better than a handgun when I'm lounging around in sweats.

I have much the same situation. The town that I live in is in rural Arizona. There are two State prisons within a 12 mi radius of me. Yes, I do carry a gun while in the house. When I am not at work ( I work at a Nuclear Power Plant, no guns allowed)
I carry concealed 99% of the time.

Yeah, I got a permit to carry,it's called the friggin Constitution.---Ted Nugent

I used to have a pistol on me all of the time. Now when I am home, I am usually wrestling with my son, so I keep one on the bookshelf where he can't reach it, but I can. I also keep the Mossberg in the gun rack in my bedroom loaded. Right now the circumstances are OK as my son can't climb up on the bookshelf or gunrack. As he gets older the placings will change, but not the state of readiness.
