Well her is two guestions one is would you carry a extra magazine with 10 rounds or highter 45cal or 9mm and second what do you carry more. 9mm hand gun or 45 acp me my self I been carrying my sig 227 carry nitron I'm more accurate with it my 9mm I'm accurate with my 229 stainless elite my glock 17 and my full size320 I'm not that great

Punctuation is a big help.

That said I carry a Glock 26 with a 12 rd mag and a backup 12 rd mag. I always carry 9mm these days.

Just to make sure I am understanding correctly, it sounds like your two questions are:
1. Do you prefer .45acp or 9mm?
2. Do you carry a back up mag if your pistol's capacity is 10 or greater?

I prefer 9mm, personally, but not for any reason beyond cost.
I do carry a back up mag, and my carry guns both hold more than 10.

I pack the most powerful gun I can control one handed and carry (usually concealed.)

Since I drive and sit often, I have found for ME, and only ME, the Glock 26 with Winchester T series 127gr JHP +p+ works best. And yes one spare magazine.

Now with winter and, soon, OC in Texas, I can carry a bit bigger gun (I'll still stay concealed but won't freak out of it's exposed.) Thus maybe my Glock 32 in .357 Sig. Bit more power, bit more ammo capacity but still same holsters and mag pouches.

I prefer an extra mag, regardless, but it all depends on the practicality of the occasion, conditions, and clothing. Sometimes I don't have it. Sometimes I just have a J-frame revolver and a speed strip (10rds total). I don't feel overly vulnerable then.

there's always the chance you may run into a situation in which you may need more rounds than you have, and so the more you carry, the less likely it is you'll come up short when the time comes. I'm also of the mind, however, that while you can prepare for a lot of eventualities, you can never be prepared for them all. I could wear a ballistic vest every day along with a motorcycle helmet in case I get hit on the head or knocked over by a vehicle, but I don't.

Carry what you feel comfortable with, understand its limitations, and enjoy life.

I mostly carry 9mm due to generally more controllability and greater capacity compared to similar sized higher caliber weapons. I prefer having an extra mag, regardless of capacity...not so much to have extra rounds (though that's a nice benefit); more so because of the possibility of primary mag failure or unintentional ejection.

When I carry my Glock 19, I carry one reload (15 rounds). When I carry my 1911, I carry 2 reloads (14 rounds total). So, 9mm I have 30 total rounds and .45 ACP I have 21 total rounds.

I carry either a P226 (20+1) or a P229 appendix (15+1) and I always have at least 1 spare 20 round mag on me. Usually it's two. Sometimes I even carry both of those guns on me.

There isn't really an argument as to why you shouldn't carry an ample amount of ammunition on you. Just people's opinions as to why they don't and "statistics" in their favor. Not to mention just reasonable laziness or discomfort in general, which falls under the opinions as to why they don't.

I can hear the negative comments already. :D

. : ; ? ! '

As already mentioned . . . punctuation helps make things clear.

It depends on what I'm carrying.

I only have 9mm semi-autos.

It depends on which one I'm carrying if I am not carrying my usual snub 38 revolver.

One is a double stack (17 round) and one is a single stack (8 round). I always carry an extra magazine.

Sorru . . . the "teacher" is coming out in me.

I generally carry an extra magazine regardless of what handgun I have on me. 16>8, and with my horizontal carrier I do not even notice the extra magazine on my belt. I also carry a 9mm as I feel it is the perfect middle ground between an adequate self defense round and size.

With the exception of my 10 round Tarurus PT-145, I carry either an officer size or 5" 1911. With any and all, I carry an extra magazine mostly for malfunction / immediate action reasons.

Somewhat of a vague question?

Should be answered in a somewhat precise way. Starting with what you need a pistol for?

Self defense is the most common reason, hunting Lions in Africa? Probably not a common answer, yes?

So if self Defense is the best bet, against humans would be the enemy/threat we are looking to defend against.

So, the caliber, and it's effectiveness against the human adversary, the living human body, is the first consideration.

The FBI have studied this for quite sometime, the modern Police carried calibers were dissected, over many years, basically the 9mm/.40 S&W/.45ACP.

First things first, how the projectile/bullet, performs in ballistic gelatin, looking at autopsy's, people who died from gunshot wounds, it soon became obvious, that there was not much difference, in the calibers, most important factor, bullet placement, what part of the anatomy was struck, and that the bullet could go deep enough to strike the organs, organs that are tied to survival.

But not pass entirely through the body.

We, the carriers, have now educated choices, based on massive dollars spent by the FBI, our only choice, is what we consider, the best pistol for us, our individual desire. Taking the FBI caliber selection as the main, common denominator, which was 9X19/9mm Luger to some.

As we have no idea how many rounds you need, for the threat you might encounter? Let us just say, more is better always! My choice the Glock 19 4th gen, which fully loaded, is a 16 round capacity, with a G17 spare magazine, more for the possibility of a malfunction, than the possibility of a 33 round gun fight, still no harm if it was a gun fight, that required more than 16 rounds!
Could it happen? It could, it has done so, not common, but it has happened.

Can you carry a Glock 19 concealed? I can.

What if it was one criminal, attacking you, and three rounds in to the central, upper body? Was required to get you out of this desperate threat?

Well, you have 13 left, not a problem.

I have carried everything from a Model 19 S&W to Colt .45 Commander as an LE officer with changing responsibilities through the years. I carried back up ammo then, now a bit older my EDC is a Sig P238, P938, Kimber Micro or G42 all light weight small pistols. I no longer carry Extra ammunition on my scrawny body but have it in the truck for a reload if I make it that far.

Having lived in Miami for nearly 40 years, I can fully understand the necessity for carrying two pistols.

People get tired of me pulling that card. Thanks for pulling the card for me!

The "statistics" don't always show it as much as it should because a lot of what goes doesn't make it past a police encounter. I've had an issue and nothing ever became of it legally. Same with two friends of mine. Not detective that appeared on scene ever came back or contacted us again. Nothing.

So yeah. Not to mention it's great in arming someone else if need be.

Also, Brit.. As always, on point! I've been carrying my P229 & P226 more than the G19 though. I hope you don't see me as a traitor now.

Extra magazines are always a huge must. I have 3 spares in the car. One of them is loaded with 20 rounds of Buffalo Bore FMJ Penetrating +p+ rounds. Or whatever they call it. I threw the box away a while ago. Plus the 2 spares on me with the same Speer Gold Dot +p's.

Is there a chance I'll ever need to use so much as a quarter of that? Who knows. What I do know is that no one can absolutely guarantee myself or anyone else that we won't. We've already prepared this far for worst case scenario.

Yes, I carry a spare mag. Three reasons:
  1. I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
  2. Possibility of having a malfunction that can be cured with a mag change.
  3. Last, but certainly not least, it balances out the weight on my belt, making carry a little more comfortable.

I carry in a jackass type shoulder holster (Triple K) so I almost have to carry 2 extra mags or I start to list to port if I don't. :)
