Carefull When The Pants Come Down

I bet he was just as stunned when his gun went off, kind of like when you realize your airbags just went off, and you've just been in a car accident.

I usually find an place to put it where no can see it when I go.

Anybody else think it was more likely that the guy had it out of the holster and fiddling with it or something?

The only way I can see an AD from dropping a modern firearm is if you try to catch it on the way down and get your finger in the trigger guard. The reason I won't carry a handgun unless it has a safety or is in a holster with a retention strap.

+1

Thats was the case with some cop who shot himself in the bathroom recently.

How many of us have been holding our collective breath waiting for this to rear it's ugly head? An open top / open bottom holster allowing the gun to move (such as a Yaqui slide) or similar style could conceivably allow the gun to be pushed up from the bottom. This is one reason why I use a shoulder rig.

This has long been an issue in Police circles. Officers using a restroom on duty and leaving their service weapon behind when they leave. One of Hillary's secret service detail got demoted for doing that not long ago.

The best advice is to place your weapon in the "cradle" formed by your pants/underwear when you use the restroom. If for some reason it will not rest there (or you don't want it there) place it muzzle down next to your ankle. The reduces the liklihood that you'll absentmindedly walk off without it.

Note: for women in dresses (or those of you who dress funny, like Kilts) placing the gun in your lap is suggested. Though that can give rise to "fiddling" to while away the time.

If one is wearing a coat or jacket, hanging it on the stall door and placing the gun in the pocket (securely) may work. The caveat here is that in women's restrooms purse snatchers have been known to grab anything on that hook (where women frequently hang their purses) and run off whilst you are "occupied".

If the restroom has a toilet tank behind the seat, place both your car keys and firearm on the tank. This way you cannot drive off without your keys and your gun. If you wear glasses, substitute them for the car keys as long as you can still see fairly well.

When preparing to leave, place the firearm in a suitable safe & stable place until your clothing is arranged, then holster it. Attempting to tuck in a shirt/blouse with the gun pulling on one side of your pants can invite embarrassment or disaster.

He was playing with his gun. That or he decided to shoot the toilet.

A Kahr has a pretty solid striker block and wouldn't go off from hitting the floor. The trigger has to be pulled to move the block.

As I've said on another forum...

I would have pulled my pants back up... re-concealed my gun and told the manager that I just had one hell of a bowel movement and it blew their cheap toilet all to hell.
