Carbon Scoring--black marks on the cylinder

Hey now...their preference for a clean looking gun (hopefully without removing metal) has no effect on anyone else

I don't know what's in those Birchwood Casey lead removing and polishing cloths, but they are definitely abrasive. I use them to polish away scratches and niks on my stainless revolvers. I don't know if it is enough to remove any material from the cylinder face, but the way I see it the carbon buildup on the cylinder face makes for a very slightly smaller cylinder gap and the way it looks doesn't bother me anyway.

The only way I go after rings around the cylinder throats is chemically and a plastic brush. I do the same on my lone blued gun but more for deposits than embedded staining like you would see on stainless.

I use the same stuff (and brush) around the forcing cone.

Ive wondered about the carbon scoring on the tops of my cylinders for years. Never went so far as to scrub them completely away every time but I do clean it up. It has always been my way to somewhat baby my guns, necessary or not. Love my guns too much to put them away without a baptism and a prayer
:)
