Car Gun Requirements

I would say any Glock. If you dislike Glock, stay with something Polymer. You can leave them in a sealed car on a 150 degree day and still pick them up without burning yourself.

My car gun is a Russian Makarov that I leave in the underseat drawer of my Dodge mini van. I keep an IWB holster and an extra magazine loaded with Cor-Bon ammo. I check it for rust etc every week or so. It is cheap and not a bad cartridge. I tend to think, however that if I were buyingd a car gun I would get one of the used S&W .38 spl that I see advertised in the Gun List. I don't lock the compartment my gun is in. If I need it I don't want to have to get the key and unlock. The advantage of a revolver is that my wife could use it safely. That is a reason that my "beside the bed" gun is a M640 .357 Mag. BYW today I received an East German Mak that my dealer ordered for me from SOG. It looks new and unfired. I paid the extra $10 for a handpicked. Jerry

Sorry about the multiple posts. My ISP was being stupid earlier. :-(

I have to agree with James E.

Only addition would be to have explosive bumpers.

SHOOT,COMMUNICATE AND MOVE OUT !

A friend and I had a favorite saying growing up:

Nuke them til they glow,
then shoot them in the dark.

Kiffster

(We also would fish and hunt at the same time. One of us would reel in 10-15# carp, and the other would shoot it with a 12 ga shotgun. Nothin but mush by the time we got it on shore. Made it disolve faster in the garden that way :D)

May I suggest a Bersa, Makarov, or any midrange caliber that you wouldn't mind being stolen or getting a little dirty. I like Glocks, but don't think I'd subject one to the dusty floor of my nasty car. I just like Glocks too much to see them dirty.

Just about ANY Walther clone might do the trick. How about one of those PA-63's (?) that are advertised on the cover of Shotgun News?

just a suggestion,
Ben

DA revolver with a 2" or 3" barrel: no ejected empties flying around, no danger of limpwristing...and if ammo goes bad you pull the trigger again. That said, use some sort of insulation (small cooler?) and rotate ammo weekly.

The gun I usually keep under the seat of my 4Runner is my Excam TA-90 (Tanfoglio version of Beretta 92) with 16+1 mag full of IMI 115gr JHP or Fed 124 Nyclad JHP's. It stays stuffed in a Cheaper Than Dirt nylon holster in case I break down and have to walk. "Wonder" finish needs minimal care. My other passenger sometimes is my .380 Makarov with Magtech 95gr JHP or CorBon 90gr +P JHP's.

Is a car really a safe place to store a firearm?

I am surprised that, so far, only FUD has suggested a lockbox attached to the car.

I think we all need to consider what happens when someone who doesn't even respect the law enough to keep out of your belongings gets a hold of a gun that is left in your car. It doesn't bode well for our communities or for our right to bear arms (since that gun stands a good chance of turning up in a crime now).

Unfortunately, CHL laws in most places mean that a gun must sometimes be stored in a car - and not everyone can afford to have secure storage added to their car - but we need to at least make sure we act responsibly and make some effort to store guns securely.

To me, that means I don't leave a gun in the car unless I absolutely have to. It also means I don't leave ammo with the gun if I do have to leave it in the car. I take the gun out of the car when I get home and store it inside.

I suggest you consider any caliber that will penetrate auto glass and that means you better put this to the test if you choose a 9mm. Some 9mm rounds won't cut it.

The .357 is extremely loud and might rupture your ear drums if the windows (winders in Dixie) are rolled up.

I like a snubby .44 Special for this task. They can be had from Taurus on the cheap and are concealable if there is a breakdown and you need to walk.

A couple of people have talked about the necessity of shooting through the glass. If your're not LEO, then aren't you going to have a hard time demonstrating that it was really self defense if the other guy can't get to you? I read Ayoob's book (I assume it's accurate enough), and it seems like you have to be able to show that the other guy had the intention, the means, and the opportunity to kill or seriously injure you. I guess that I can concoct situations where the bad guy is shooting at you through glass. Is that the kind of situation you want to be able to handle?

Thanks,

Munir

I don't worry about barriers/glass/etc. Too much. If someone is driving a vehicle at me, I'm going to get out of the way! If that doesn't work, shattering the windshield with a few rounds should distract him enough from me to evac the area. As for barriers (i.e. doors), I'm not going to try and hit someone through a barrier. I have no idea if the perp has moved and that round is going downrange to hit the current version of Mother Theresa. I'm not an LEO. My only goal is to deter or eliminate a threat to myself or another innocent person. To me, that doesn't include shooting through doors/windows to hit someone.

I carry a Rossi Model 88. It is stainless 5 shot 2" .38 spl. But my story has somewhat of a twist. Living where I do in the Peoples republic of Kalifornia I can't legally carry anything anywhere. But this is what I did. I also live in earthquake (Los Angeles area) country and both my vehicles have extensive EQ kits. The Rossi went into mine but I carried it in the prescibed legal method here locked in a container unloaded in the trunk. I know I am still basicly unarmed and if I needed it right away I am out of luck. Even carrying the way I do is still illegal (you have to be going somewhere like a range not just tooling around it your car for it to be legal to carry). I have carried it that way for almost 10 years. I have never had any corrosion problems. As far a ammo goes don't get too bent about storage. I usually rotate it about once a year. I use only new factory ammo (Federal Hydra-shok +p) and have never had ANY problems. I just shoot up the old and install new. I have a small Ammo wallet made by MTM it holds 12 loose rounds in a snap in tray it is about the size of a regular mans wallet and I have two speed loaders for it. 22 rounds isn't alot but I am not looking for an extended firefight I just want to get home.

Please keep in mind why I have it set up this way. It is not set up for daily carry or use (unfortunately) I really have it there for the next big earthquake when everyone is on foot and I have to get from work to home or school about 6-7 miles. I teach emergency prepardness classes so I try to cover all the angles.

It did come out once and that was during the Los Angeles Riots (oops sorry "Social Unrest") I got from work to home to get the family out of there and it went from the trunk into my waistband(No CCW but everyone was carrying that week). Never used it but it was sure nice to have it no one was going to pull me out of my car. Hope this helps.

Conan, you're on the right track! At least a .44 magnum with 8 3/8" barrel using 300 grain hard cast cores for hunting cars and light trucks (tungsten cores may be better for heavy truck V8 engine blocks ;). Better yet, a 50 caliber Sharps - as in Rancho Deluxe :D

Originally I would use my Steyr GB, 18 round mag, with GECO 124gr FMJ ammo. It was really too big for concealed carry and the custom holster guys don't have molds for it so car carry seemed like a good idea. Until I found the ultimate car gun. A Calico 9mm carbine with a 100 round magazine. I have a spare 50 for it too. I use the one with the collapsable stock and just remove the stock so you end up with a LONG barreled pistol. Fortunately it is still long enough to comply as a rifle so there were no fees for a SBR. Same load, bottom ejection (to keep brass from flying around inside the car), and a 630nm laser sight makes for a great car gun. You can even point behind you over the shoulder resting the barrel on the seat and look for the red dot in your rear view mirror. The long barrel keeps the muzzle blast in the back seat.

9mm penetrates better than .45. A fact, folks. I like .45 and all, but if I had to worry about penetration, it would be 9 over a .45, and 10mm over the both.

Agree with Kelly. I used to carry "car guns" ranging from an ancient Police Positive to a Ballester Molina. Then I started figuring into the equation how pissed off I would be if some scumbag broke into my car and stole my gun. I would grudgingly give up the stereo, but I would freak if my gun fell into scum hands.

So now the car gun is whatever I am carrying at the time. I don't like going somewhere, parking and worrying about the piece I have stashed in the car.

For reasons of security, I wouldn't leave a gun in my car if the choice was entirely mine, because even if the gun was in a safe, the car could still be stolen and the gun removed from the safe at the thief's leisure. In my workplace, however, not even a licensed gun is permitted--and the penalty is imprisonment. So, I either leave my gun at home--rendering my CHL worthless most of the time--or I leave it in the car. I choose the latter, but am careful where I park (near the staffed exit booth), have nothing on or in the car that says "gun," double-check the windows and door locks, etc. After five years no problems so far. But I'm alert to the risk and keep looking for ways to reduce it without effectively dropping my CHL into the shredder.

I'm with Elector on this one; if I don't occupy my vechile, I ain't leav'in a weapon
for an intruder. However, I regularly can be
found armed with a Glock 27; and it's very
accessible from the sitting position of my
car. :) If hunting fugitives becomes the art
of the day; then I guess I would pack my
S&W Model 629 Classic with 5" barrel, which
I'm picking up this morning!!! :D

Best Wishes,
