Can't get the lead out!

I have been trying for 3 days now to get a lead build out of my 4 month old Berreta 9mm Cx4 Storm carbine. It is mostly located about a 1/4 of the way down the barrel. I let my son and his friends use the gun at the range and gave them 300 rnds of 115g. LRN to shoot. Well when he brought it back he negleted to clean it and it sat that way for about a month. I have tried Butches Bore and JB bore clean. I even let the JB soak in over night for 3 nights now. I am slowly winning the battle and getting most of it out. But does anyone know a better and faster way to get all the lead build up out? I did see on the JB instructions to try cleaning immediately after firing it so the barrel is still hot. Has anyone tried this and does it seem to work?

I don't know about the barrel being hot ....frankly never tried it.

A couple of things I use ....Barnes CR-10 works pretty well / but its caustic - so be careful with it. Let it set in barrel for a few minutes / then brush it / clean it ---and repeat as necessary ....

Another product I really like is "lead removal" cloth. You cut a small patch ( like 2" X 2" ) and run it thru the barrel about 8 or 9 times ...and its amazing stuff .... it works really well ...and easy ! Its about $ 6 a package / but you don't use much .... cabelas and most places sell it.

Be careful on blued surfaces with it ....it will take off bluing ...but using it on a barrel, out of a gun obviously, ought to be fine .....

( Oh, and don't lend your guns to anybody ....) :D

"Copper" Chore-Boy pot scrubbers. Wrap some around a bore brush with Hoppes on it. A couple of times through and your done. Just be sure the Chore Boy is copper. Works every time. You can buy them in most grocery stores.

Pot scrubber check

Try the pot scrubber with a magnet to make sure it is copper. I am awaiting the arrival of Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner i ordered today. Having a hard time cleaning lead from 38 J-Frame, I thank deposits from jacketed bullets made this mess.

Lewis lead remover or a clone thereof. Don't use the forcing cone cleaner as that is for revolvers. Buy a .38 size and just use the bore cleaner part.

Just take your cleaning kit with you to the range and put 5 shots down the barrel and clean while the barrel is still hot. Keep the bluing dry.

Or take a pot of boiling hot water and with the barrel off, pour it down the barrel (with a funnel) into a bucket, then using a copper bore brush scrub the barrel. Dry and oil after cleaning. Standard procedure for in-line muzzle loaders and should work for the CX4 as well.

I keep hearing that the old timers used turpentine for lead removal. Try saturating a patch and run it through and then take your bronze brush with more turpentine and scrub away. I've also been wanting to try a 50/50 mixture of acetone and automatic transmission fluid (ATF) as I hear it creeps even better than Kroil. Let us know what works for you.

But does anyone know a better and faster way to get all the lead build up out?
After you have tried all the above suggestions/solutions, fire five or so jacketed loads and you will find that the leading has disappeared.
Also, the difficulty of removing lead from the barrel has nothing to do with how long it has sat after firing.

The 4 or 5 jacketed loads is the easiest and fastest if your where you can shoot. Like before you leave the range.

If your at home, use the the chore boy. If you dont have one, get one. Lead will never bother you again. Very fast, very easy.

I second the copper Chore Boy. Make sure it is copper though. I had a bad batch of lead (soft) in my Colt 1911 and the Chore Boy made short work of it. Take several strands of the CB and wrap the copper strands around your brush. Stroke it all the way and all the way out. I really load up my brush with multiple strands of CB and it works - works well.

Shooter's-choice lead remover, with a bronze brush and elbow grease take the lead out of all my handguns.

I've had good luck with the Chore Boy too. Another approach that is all chemical is Wipe Out No-Lead. Unlike Shooters Choice and JB which are mild abrasives, No-Lead actually dissolves the lead chemically with out scrubbing. When I first got it I didn't believe you could dissolve lead. I poured a little in a shot glass and dropped a .22 bullet in it. The bullet promptly started to bubble and dissolve. It's slow but doesn't hurt the steel or bluing. It will attack copper and brass so don't use it with a brass brush.

Cleaining more frequent will help alot. I have a set amount for my rifles and pistols. Also what your running down them may come into play on how often to clean. I have had real good luck with Butches bore shine. Most the time you wont even need a brush. Sorry I was not much help. I have never tryed cleaning when still warm. But who knows may work great.

WOW have I been through that. The only thing that worked for me was lots of lube, heating the barrel, and using a lathe to break up the bullets into pieces for easy removal. GOOD LUCK!

Lewis Lead Remover. If all else fails, Outers foul-out will lift stuff out of the bore, even a supposedly clean one that you will not believe.
