I'm trying to choose a new revolver for carry. I'm looking for something small, light, and powerful. right now i'm trying to choose between the following:
Taurus Judge 2 inch barrel
LCR .357
Taurus 445 .44 special
if you have any other suggestions i'm open to anything
I recommend the Ruger Sp101 in 357. It's a little on the heavy side, but I don't find it to be a problem. These revolvers are built solid and can handle anything you put through them. I absolutely love mine.
Ruger SP101. Awesome pistols. Or a J-frame smith of some kind. The LCR is very light but I think they are ugly. I'm sure they are functional though. I can't recommend a single thing that has "Taurus" stamped on it.
Of the three you listed I would choose the LCR, but I voted other. I have a Ruger SP101 (.357) if I feel like carrying a .357, but I always carry a S&W 642 Airweight with .38 Sp +P. It is small and light and really easy to carry in a pocket or IWB. I highly recommend the S&W 642 or 638.
S&W 617? It's a 22 caliber. Speaking of S&W, I'd suggest the 640-1. I think that's the 357 magnum or 38 special cylinder model. Pick either round to carry.
Not only is a 617 a 22 lr, it's not a carry friendly one.
I'd definitely go with the LCR. Very nice piece and a great trigger. The sp101 is great, but it takes a bit of work to make the trigger even mediocre. A 3" sp101 makes a great multipurpose gun. But for CC I'd go with the LCR. I've never seen a sp101 with a trigger that was even close to that of an LCR. On the other hand a 617 has a great trigger.
From your options I'd go with the LCR. Though I'd be very apprehensive over firing a .357 out of a gun that light. If you want a .44 look into the Charter Arms Bulldog. Big heavy bullet and not as much recoil, compared to the .357.
I have an older J frame (Model 36) and I can carry it all day without it being even noticable. It's small, light, easy to carry in a pocket and 5 rounds of .38 Special should be more than enough to back some joker off. If you want more gun, go with something rated for +P or .357
I think the judge might be a tad heavy. I shot one and it felt fine, shot some .410 out of it and it felt like .38 spc +p out of my gp100, no trouble at all.
