Can you talk me out of the XDM 3.8" 9mm?

I, and I think the majority of people here would steer you away from Taurus. Strongly.

I like the ergos of the PX4 Storm but was never a fan of the trigger. I also really dislike the slide mounted safety lever. I could probably get by with a 'G' model(decock only) but why bother when there are other guns I like more?

It sounds like you'll probably be well served by any of the guns on your list(other than Taurus). So just pick whichever one really calls out to you. I am admittedly a big fan of HK as we were discussing last night. So that would be my recommendation. I think the other guns are just fine though and should serve you well whichever you pick.

The good news, at least in my mostly-undereducated opinion, is that all of the handguns on your list are built by companies with solid reputations. Even if you find that you hate what you buy, reselling shouldn't be a problem, and I would expect them to hold their value fairly well.

Could debate this

OP says.

In reality, it has now become simple and I will tell you why.

XDM (or Mod 2.0) will cost you $500+ for the XDm, not sure what the 2.0 goes for.
CZ75 SP-01 is going to cost way more than 500.
PX4 is a nice gun but there are better on your list.

Now, for my money and due to the rebate, I would pick the VP9 because you will end up paying in the 550 range and have a superior gun.

I did end up seeing the VP is not included in the rebate and also couldn't find FN giving $100. I'll look more, I did see something about FN 15 coming with a $125 visa.

Huh, you're right about the HK. It makes sense since it's the VP9 is a brand-new gun. I've very little experience with the guns included in the rebate, but I think they're all hammer-fired anyway.

I might have misread the FN promotion - looking on their website, I think they just lowered the MSRP across the board on their black-finished pistols. KY Gun Co. has some listed at $560, and others listed at $450... I think that's due to coding the model numbers of guns already in stock. Also, note that their 'compact' FNS-9 is really the size of a subcompact (3.6" barrel), and their regular FNS-9 is the size of a compact (4" barrel). Confusing, I know, but I actually prefer this nomenclature - 'compact' handguns should really be called 'mid-size'.

In any event, I'd strongly recommend giving the Walther PPQ a look. I really, really like the ergos on the gun, and it's got one of the nicest striker-fired triggers on the market (which, ironically, is the exact reason I didn't buy one, but that's a whole other debate).

GLOCK

I just assumed it was implied. You're right, of course - the Glock-19 really sets the bar against which all other guns are measured. So yes, the Glock-19 should really be in the running, unless the OP has already eliminated them. They're also readily available as law-enforcement trade-ins, and have tons and tons of after-market accessories available to them.

Appreciate all the replies. Obviously idk much. This will be my first semi auto.

Due to that I think striker fired is best. No extra nonsense to worry about and same trigger pull always. (As far as I know) decocker is just another thing to worry about for me with little experience.

Strikers are a good choice for the reason you state. Of course, that means

I guess I have a top 5
XDM (or Mod 2.0)
CZ SP-01
PX4 Storm

H&K VP (or USP)

All of those bolded are hammer-fired. Also, while I absolutely love my SP-01, it's way too big and heavy to be suitable for carry.

Since you can't get your hands on much to try and want opinions from here then let me again say that the XDM 3.8 would be a fine choice. I would strongly advise you to get the compact version. That way you can have a full size grip frame with lots of room for your hand and lots of ammo with the extended mag or you can have a more concealable short frame gun with the flush mag. Also,if you decide to tinker, the aftermarket is full of good stuff for the XDM(think Powder River Precision,Pistolgear,Springer Precision and Dawson Precision to name a few).

Is yours the "compact"? I saw an SP-01 and a P-01 on their site. Essentially the same minus size in guessing?

Not 100% ruling out a hammer.

Ps: having trouble with quotes still. I followed the instructions and still didn't work lol.

I would not recommend the 3.8 9mm XDM but I would recommend a different XDM. the 3.8 is an odd concept for me to understand. normally when marketing smaller versions of existing guns for concealed carry, the grip is shortened as that is the part that often "prints" through clothing and gives away the fact that you are carrying a firearm. the 3.8 however went the other direction and shortened the slide. in most instances the length of the slide is irrelevent as the slide is often tucked down your pants or along your sides and is the easiest to conceal so springfield with their 3.8 shortened the sight radius(distance between the front and rear sight) making it more difficult to shoot accurately while doing nothing to increase a person's ability to conceal it. there is a 3.8 compact that has the shorter slide and shorter grip but it is a different model and all too often I see people accidentally grab the 3.8 when they wanted the 3.8 compact.

I love XDMs and my primary CCW at the moment is an XDM compact so depening on your reason for owning I would say get the 3.8 compact if you are considering using it for concealed carry or opt for the xdm 4.5 or 5.25 models if you just want it as a range toy, or night stand gun.

I also own the Ruger SR9 compact and it is a fine gun. it is my secondary concealed carry piece. it's not exactly the same quality as the XDM and I don't shoot it quite as accurately but for $400 it is very hard to beat.

I agree that you need to be looking smaller. even though thse suggested guns don't look big, they are when your carrying in the summer. cz is my favorite type of pistol, but it's not easy to carry. I would look into the shield. it's pretty cheap, has a really nice trigger and it's super reliable and easy to use. I actually prefer the Taurus pt111 gen2 over the shield, but that's heresy around here. but at least check out the shield and the beretta nano if you are truly planning to carry this thing 24/7

don't discount a bland old glock too, they make some pretty small ones nowadays

Yes, the P-01 is the alloy-framed compact version of the SP-01; that is suitable for carry. I have the PCR, which is the P-01 without the rail.

Honestly, I really would not recommend getting a CZ unless you've handled one in-person, and decide you really love it. It's popular on gun boards, but not popular in general, making its resale value lower than you'd expect, and support/accessories a lot more limited as well.

Glock, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, and HK will probably have the best resale/trade-in value, making it far less risky. Glock and Springfield will also have the most accessories available.

Where are you located again (forgive me if you've already said it - I'm typing this on my phone and can't easily search backwards)? Can you get to a Bass Pro Shop, or another gun shop that will at least let you handle some guns even if you can't rent/shoot them? It's hard to make a bad choice with any of the brands we've discussed, but unless you get to grope a few, it's also hard to make the best choice.

If you're ordering blind, the Glock, Springfield, or S&W will be your least risky options, the Ruger will be the most economical, and the SIG P320 your most versatile.

Yes there are Bass Pro around. I'm in Missouri :)

Had planned on going tonight or tomorrow to a few local shops to at least hold a few to see what fits well.
