Can I convert Savage Axis XP in 308 to 260

have you tried your base 308 xp yet? You might be surprised how well it shoots--mine does this:

Anyway--if you're looking to do some long range with your 260 I'd suggest going the extra to 26" BTW--I believe BHW has the ability to not only flute but can port your barrel at the end in one operation--in other words it will be an integral part of the barrel--no thread/screw-on.

Most everything I took to the range was neck sized only for the tikka. Here is one picture of a 3 shot group using 178 Amax that I had fls This is 1-10 twist and Tikka is 1-11. It's nowhere near yours but not bad for $300.00 rifle. Going to be 2 weeks before I send it off so you know I come straight home and loaded up 50 rounds for this up coming weekend. I know I'm changing barrel to a 260 but I'm going to keep the 308 just to reuse again. It's going to hold its own with a rifle double the price. My first Savage and I'm impressed. Picture wouldn't post but sub moa without flyaway. The porting does sound good. Never thought about it but it would help some. 26 inch a little more weight too

Anything MOA or less is den good for the lowly budget class ; )Like Glocks--people love bashing Savages. I let the groupings do the talking. : ) As to porting--I only mentioned that because they can do it--not that it's ideal for the 260 since I honestly have no experience with it. If it were me going that route I might be inclined to get a fluted heavy barrel with a good target crown--but I defer to the experience of others with more experience with the 260. I'm sure you've already realized black hole is great to work with.

You bet. They were some of the friendliest people I've dealt with in a long time. The receptionist knew as much about their barrels as their expert did. I think that's a good deal for barrel and putting it on and test firing to ensure quality and fit. I'm wanting to shoot Nosler 130-140 gr out of it. They stated they test all their barrels with Nosler. Told me about new lighter bullets Nosler had made to stabilize longer distances and seat longer to get closer to the lands. They have a new contoured barrel although not a bul barrel but dissipates heat more evenly that should shoot 5 rounds at 3200fps and still not overheat the barrel. That's the one I'm going to buy. Was going to get fluted but I want the extra weight.

That tight 308 group above out of my Axis are 150 ballistic silver tips with lubalox. have had great results with custom comps as well.

My tikka 1-11 has only been shot with 165 and above. Mainly that's all I can find. I like the moly coated Nosler combined technology silver tips in 7 mag and 308. They had some 150 s and I may get some since the Savage is 1-10. I shoot 140-150 out of the 7 mag. Same bullet. I was hoping the Tikka would like the accubonds. We are going on Muleys hunt at YO ranch this fall. Not afraid of the bt's but would like something little more stouter. Tried 4 types of powder at every load you could think of.best groups were 2 inches or just barely under. Noslers running around average .423 to .590 depending if I use IMR powder or Reloader 15.

I think I'm going to order the stock and have it put on before I send it off to get the barrel. Want to try stock out with 308 barrell on it now. Since I'm going to mostly use this at the bench I'm thinking of thumb hole stock. Had one years ago on Thompson center and really liked it.
