Can a 44 WCF be safely converted to a 44 Special?

Well the idea is to shoot regular 44/40 loads at the range but have the added advantage of a deer sized round if that was in the works. The reasoning is: if being "historically correct" on shooting a cowboy cartridge like the 44/40 is important you can have your cake (target ammo) and eat it too (heavy hunting loads).

I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer at 100 yards or less with a case full of bp and a 200 grain LRNFP. There's been many deer killed with the 44-40 without punching it out to the max. Probably as many or more than the 30-30 has killed.

I have done it many times. Never had a deer run more than ten yards. Most just drop. A 200gr lead bullet on top of 40gr of 3f BP at 1300 fps (from 24 inch barrel) is great for deer.
