Calling Guns Toys

Self-righteous test:

Have you ever loaded up the mag in your semi-auto to see how fast you can empty it with no regard to accuracy? You are not practicing using your gun in the intended way for it to be a tool. Now you wouldn't do that while with someone who is new to shooting, but you do it when with the right crowd. You are playing. Treating it as a toy. Same goes for calling it a toy. All depends on the situation you are in. You cannot get all butthurt when someone calls it a toy and then go to the range and act like it is a toy.

A couple people commented on the poor use of toy when referring to any gun, something I kind of agree with. What do you all think?..............

I think it's a little silly to create a thread about it. The context in which the term "toy" is used is harmless and limited.

We also have the option not to use the "toy" context around kids, and that's probably a good idea.

lol...

to each his own. I think you are bing a little uptight. A toy is something that puts a smile on your face. Something you look forward to all week long. Nothing wrong with calling guns toys IMO. Nor is there anything wrong with the zombie ammo and guns. Would a buy one myself, prolly not. But if it gets someone else to start shooting then great

I agree with you about about calling guns toys. Between two responsible adults such as "Hey, Mike want to go shoot my new toy?" but calling them that all the time or in front of kids makes you look like slobbering mongoloid in my opinion. And Im certain 90% of the people that zombie gun appeals to probably shouldn't own a firearm. lol

I have some firearms that are strictly for fun/plinking and will never be used for anything serious by me (sidelock BP pistol for one). I have no problem with anybody calling them a "toy", though i don't generally shoot with youngsters.

I tend to agree with the poster. As responsible gun owners its VERY important to keep things reel. There are way to many people around and often in ear shot that would love to see our right taken away. The other issue is if children are in ear shot. The consequences of mistakes in this sport are so permanent and severe that it should never be taken lightly.
Just my $0.02.

"Him that dies with the most toys, wins"

That said, almost everything I own is referred to as "a toy" at some time or another, I fully intend to win this game.

Material objects that I get to use that brings me joy to operate can all be called "toys."

As noted, they are tools as well. Some of my tools give me pleasure and they are toys. A toilet plunger is a tool that I need and that does work, but doesn't bring me pleasure. It is not a toy.

Funny story. When the kids were growing up, I was careful to differentiate for them real life vs TV. I also told them that even with toy guns, they should be respectful to non-combatants and don't point your toy guns at anyone not in the game. Some people can be offended by this.

So I roll in home from work one day, and they are engaged in battle in the front yard. Ones pinned down behind the tree and one is covering him from the other side of the walk. As I come up the walk, as professional as you please, he goes to low ready and is obviously being muzzle considerate to me. (a 6 yr old!)

It wasn't a real gun but it was clear the training was working. I am so proud of him for that! I made sure to tell the momma what happened so she could be proud too, or at least less worrysome, you know how girls are. ;)

For me, I own a couple guns that "toy" would be the only word that really fits. A gun that is not a weapon because I will never use it to defend myself, nor is it a tool because it will never put food on the table. If a car can be called a toy then i believe a gun should also. A car or truck is capable of far more destruction when not taken seriously than a gun.

With that said at no time should safety with a firearm weather it is for fun or for defense be taken lightly. The same way as I buckle up and pay attention when I am driving.

Excellent story. Well done dad.
