Caliber Choice

If it were me and having the calibers you already have how about a 25-300wsm. Im sure its been done but im not well versed in wildcats. Winchester should have built this round instead of the 25wssm

Did I miss something here?

I thought he said it's a New Haven Mod 70 Winchester in .300 WSM.

If that's correct, EVERYTHING mentioned above is too long for the action. It's a short action rifle!

Not everything mentioned is too long, the 450 Marlin case is 2.10" same as the WSM case. The M70 WSM action uses a mag that is 3.10" long. If a guy can load to mag length and still feed you got a 3.10" COAL. You will limit your bullet options working with such a short magazine without compromising powder room

Noslers 500 grain bullets would be out with a bullet length of 1.5" you would have to seat them to deep to make them work. However a Barnes original with a length of 1.25" in a 400 grain should work just fine. Anyway that is how I figure it, if my math is correct? ;)

That is correct, but that was suggested by Orphanedcowboy, himself. I should have specified, but I was not including .450 Marlin.

The other cartridges discussed some very briefly that would work in the WSM action such as:
Well since you're not opposed to a wildcat why not a .450 WSM?
I've had 2 300WSM build and 270WSM on Win model 70 actions if I did another it be the 6.5x300wsm.
I had considered the 350 Rem Mag, but it mirrors the 350WSM closely.
Here is the only one suggested that wouldn’t fit:
.416 Weatherby Magnum, develop a load using the Barnes 350 grain TSX.
There is another round out there that is supposed to have the same case capacity as the .458 Win in WSM length action called the .458 B&M cartridge.
If it were me and having the calibers you already have how about a 25-300wsm.
Other than that the most of the other cartridges mentioned were for refrence only. I listed the .458 Win Mag, .400 Whelen, and .411 Hawk to discuss possible head space and shoulder issues.

..and I new it wouldn't. A 450 Marlin just seems so puny in comparison. It also has a rainbow like trajectory.

I haven't loaded on the lower end of the spectrum, near the 200gr range, but I would suspect you could flatten it out somewhat. I could really care less for distance with this one, its main use would be pigs and they will be well inside 100yds.

This will be a niche gun that I will not be letting go of after it is built.

Thanks guys

450 Marlin sounds pretty good for that. A couple of months ago a man at the gun store was talking about using his .45-70 on hogs, said it gave them quite a whallop.

I had a Ruger #3 in .45-70 once, but I never got around to killing anything with it. I had a post-64 Model 70 in .458 Winchester that I shot a couple of deer with though, it did a good job with reduced loads.

I understand wanting something different for fun.

I'd neck that WSM up to .411. You'd have everything from cast lead revolver bullets for practice up to 400 gr stuff for the big critters. Should be a very effective and efficient cartridge.

Everybody seems to be overlooking the .37 cal. A .375 wildcat on the WSM case should give you approximate .375 H&H performance (ok, maybe a bit less) in a short action rifle. Trajectory would also be close to the .30-06.

I'm not familiar with the specific rifle mentioned, how can you have a "controlled round push feed"? Seems like you can have one, or the other, to me.

A .375 WSM sounds neat, I tried to find some velocity figures and ran across these figures on another forum. If these are accurate it looks like a great round. I down loaded the 375 H&H to about 2500 fps with the 270 grain spire point and it worked great on deer. The idea of the .416 WSM sounds intriguing as well.

270 gr. Hornady 2631 fps SD of 11
260 gr. Nosler 2673 fps SD of 08
250 gr. Kodiak 2702 fps SD of 05
235 gr. Speer 2840 fps SD of 17

From My next project! 375 WSM? post#17

The controlled round push feed is basically a push feed bolt with a 1/3 of the bolt face removed to allow the round to slide up behind the extractor. It works with most calibers but with some calibers it can be problematic, I haven't found that to be the case with the WSM versions.
