cabelas...

I’ve only been to a Cabelas twice. Once in Reno. I wasn’t with someone I felt comfortable looking at guns with, so just looked from a distance. Biggest gun department I’ve ever seen. Went to the new one in Springfield, OR a few months ago. New store. 5 and 6 people deep at the gun counter, and could not even walk down the ammo isles. I did find a sleeping bag I liked for $89, but they only had the display model left, and I couldn’t find anyone to help me. Store was so crowded, we just left. It’s very small compared to the Reno store.

Got home, and bought the sleeping bag from Cabelas online for $69 shipped right to my front door. A full $20 cheaper online than in the store.

I do look for their sales on ammo. I recently bought a case of S&B in 9mm online for $189 shipped. Just bought a few boxes more of the stuff at $9.99/box.

4 hour drive to the closest Cabelas to me, and I find it much more enjoyable to sit at my computer and order. The sales come up often, and are worth it.

Cabelas has some great ammo prices on and off sale. Locally, they have Federal brass cased JHP boxes of 50 for $15.99 all day long. When they are running a sale, I have found some types of ammo $3-5 a box of 50 off of regular prices.

As for guns, some of the guns they have at "normal" prices are pretty good, some are not it seems to be very hit or miss depending on brand.

Also I wanted to add: the one here in Hoffman Estates at least has a good selection of long guns but only really a "sampling' of handguns. They do however seem to have a butt ton of LEO trade in guns, lots of USP45 LEM's, lots of other LEO trade in's, very few .40 S&W trade in's.

I also just got $10.00 off of $100.00 worth of ammo, considering the ammo was already on sale I got a good deal.

recently bought a case of S&B in 9mm

I love S&B, my LGS has it for $12.99 a box and Cabelas has it cheaper a lot of the time. The stuff is cheap but it works and seems to work well.

Cabela's....
Overpriced.
Over-hyped.
Over confident.

One of the most ridiculous places around.

Support your local businesses, unless they have a deal you just can't pass up (but see if the local shop can match the deal).

It's free to look, but don't give them your money without making sure you know what you're doing.

They're very conservative in their ratings. That's good. However, the folloiwng link shows just what they have, and how far out of reality they are in some of their pricing. The revolver listed is a S&W Model 28-2, Highway Patrolman. It's been refinished, which is very obvious, and the asking price is $1250. I sent an email to the gun library, advising them of the error. That was three weeks ago, and still no response as of today.

At best, this Model 28 is worth maybe $450, since it's been refinished, and doesn't even have the correct stocks on it. S&W has confirmed that there were 50 satin-finished Model 28's done for the Florida Highway Patrol, but this one's not among them. Cabela's must have been taken on the buy, and they're attempting to recoup their loss.

I've gone over it before, but I'll hit it again, quickly:
Cabela's buys for abut 10% of a firearm's value (or less), and marks it up to about 250-300% of market value.

They do not get "taken on the buy", and they are not trying to "recoup their loss". They absolutely robbed some poor fellow (probably paid about $80 for that S&W), and now want top dollar for the pistol. Sadly, some idiot is going to pay what they're asking, because.... it's the Gun Library. They only put the really rare, exciting, custom, and expensive stuff in here! Right?

Another example of the stupidity of Cabela's customers:
Right now the Cabela's by me (Lehi UT) has three Marlin 336s in .30-30 WCF (cross-bolt safety, recent production) in the gun library, next to a pre-64 Win Model 94 in .30-30 WCF. The Marlins are priced at more than $900 (more than they want for a brand new one), and the Winchester... $450. They'll sell all of those Marlins for the asking price, because people are stupid enough to trust that Cabela's wouldn't pull a fast one on them. Idiots...

Do not trust Cabela's to "treat you right". They are a business. They are interested in one thing:
Taking your money away from you.

C0untZer0- What's an IL processing fee!?

I too would like to know what an “Illinois processing fee” is? Being from Illinois, and this is the first I’ve heard of it, it has me curious. Something new? Hidden in the cost at most places? Gun shop gossip maybe?

ha! I was confused by the gun library. I thought it was going to be some antique rifles from the Revolution or Civil War.

I doubt I'll buy any guns at Cabelas. They were selling used Minis for about $50 the price of new. Weird. Lots of good accessories such as holsters and I did buy a pistol magazine there.

New Cabela's in Wichita

There's a new Cabela's going in on the east side of Wichita and will be open sometime in the spring and I'm stoked. Not because I want to buy their overpriced guns, but because I enjoy just walking around in there. I don't even bother going into the gun library anymore. There is a Gander Mountain downtown, but it's a little out of the way for me living about 30 miles east of downtown. And there is really no other good gun shops around unless you count pawn shops.

I hope Cabela's gives them some competition and maybe they'll come down on their prices. I doubt it though. There was a Sportsman's Warehouse on the east side that went out of business. Not sure how that happened. They just renovated the Gander Mountain for the 3rd time since they built the store 5 years ago. :confused:Probably trying to compete with Cabela's. Their stuff is on the outrageous side too. I actually felt insulted when I saw the prices on their used guns.

The one thing I'm most looking forward to is that someone on my wife's side of the family usually gives me a gift card to Cabela's for Christmas.:D
Guess they're not all bad after all.

It makes buying ammo a lot nicer. It's like I'm getting it for free...cause i am.:D

I think our Sportsmans Warehouse went under too.

Right, Cabelas is awesome even just to walk around. Huge aquariums and displays full of full mount trophies, ours even has an elephant!

Gun prices are high, but good for accessories and ammo.

That being said, starting to better appreciate Academy more. Found a 870 for $270 there tonight.

I've been a Cabela's customer since their business operated out of small brick building next to the railroad tracks in Sidney, NE (very early 70's). I have never purchased a firearm or bow, or centerfire ammunition or arrows from Cabela's. Nevertheless, I rarely buy anything relating to firearms, archery, hunting or fishing without comparing products and prices available at Cabela's at that time. As a result I have purchased a lot of merchandise from the company and I have been very satisfied with their service - including exchanges and returns of defective or unsatisfactory products. I wish we had a local Cabela's store to compete with Bass Pro, Scheel's and Sportsman's Warehouse since these big box stores have virtually eliminated the small specialized stores.
