Buying police trade in from Buds

I have had the S&W M&P 40 Compact on my wish list for some time. Right now, Buds has police trade-ins (most with night sights) from $319-399. The $399 examples are in "unissued" condition (new other than the department stamp), with 3 mags, nightsights, and box. I'll probably go with one of the issued, used condition guns. On one of the tiers (the $349 guns) there are quite a few reviews, one of the 23 is unhappy (1 star), 1 gives only 3 stars, 3 give 4 stars, and the rest give it 4 stars with many comments putting the gun in 95%+ condition. Most have night sights (the $339 tier does not).

I've bought from Buds before, but never a police trade-in. How much better condition will the $349 guns be over the $339 guns, vs. the $319 guns? They also have a $379 tier, but I figure if I do that, I may as well go $20 more and get the unissued guns and basically get a new gun. Other than the unissued guns, the rest only have 2 mags (another reason to ignore the $379 tier, $20 for a basically new gun over a lightly used gun, plus an extra mag).

I'm leaning towards ignoring the cheapest $319 tier (with nightsights) since the guns in the poorest condition would be in that tier and at higher priced tiers, it sounds like most of the guns are pretty nice. I do want nightsights, so I'm looking mainly at the $349 tier or the unissued guns for $399.

Any suggestions?

If the 40 compact is truly what you want...and you have rented one before...by all means go for the $400 one. The others will have holster wear to varying degrees, that's about it.

And, in the grand scheme of things, the extra $50.00 isn't going to make a big difference in your life. A couple years from now it won't make any difference...

Darn, I will have a little time to think about it. I had been avoiding getting the MD handgun license because having to get fingerprinted to exercise a constitutional right really didn't sit well with me. I held out for just over 2 years since the law took effect, but there are a few holes in my collection that it is time to fix and I'm not sure if I'm ever leaving MD or not (and there is a chance that I may be leaving but for NJ so it won't be any better). So, it is time to get the license. It can take 30 days or so to get it, so I was going to put the gun on layaway so it would be held for me, but take a month or so to pay it off so it won't get to my local FFL before the state police process my handgun license. Well, I just double checked and they allow layaway on new firearms only (in one place on the website they had that it was on firearms only, on another that I found when the shopping cart didn't give a layaway option, it showed new firearms only). I was about to buy the unissued one.

There was another gun that was new, and was going to be next until I saw the police trade-ins. I figured I'd get the police trade first since as a used gun, it will only be around for so long, while the new gun will remain available. Since I have to wait on the used gun until my MD handgun license anyway, I guess I'll get the new gun now and hope one of the nicer S&W M&P 40 Compacts are still around once I have the license. Man, I wish I gave in earlier (I started thinking it was time to start adding to my collection a few months ago, but I continued to hold out on the fingerprint abomination).

I really hate Maryland.

Boy are you confused, yes moving to a free state would enhance your life greatly. Perhaps if you first saved the money to purchase the pistol you could go into the store and buy whichever "tier" suited you best. I am not a advocate of layaway as I would rather pay and go, and not deal with pay and wait.

A few dollars more or less on a gun purchase isn't that important in life. Don't let that gun sale and your selection get you down. You can control some aspects of your life more than others. In this gun sale to add to your collection I'd recommend spending the extra few bucks to get what you desire. Do it now and don't look back. A few bucks isn't worth the stress on you. Soon you will enjoy that new addition to your collection. :)

A friend of mine bought a 40 S&W police trade in, he always had accuracy issues with it until he replaced the barrel at additional cost and that solved the issue.

I've had several police trade-ins over the years, and they all were of the "used" variety -- they showed some holster wear but otherwise seemed like new. You could do worse, particularly with a "unissued" gun. Except for warranty issues, which might occur, that's the same as "new old stock."

The typical "cop gun" looks banged up, but I can say with great certainty that they fall into this criteria -

Carried a million miles, dropped once and fired 50 times.

Seriously, most police trade ins have a few thousand rounds through them unless the department has some really awesome training standards and a really awesome budget to buy the ammo.

I own several, and someday, will own several more and have never had a hiccup from any of them. FWIW.

It's sometimes dependent on the issuing agency.

Specifically, I've observed that pistols used by prison guards tend to look a lot worse than typical police guns, due to having been drawn and placed in a storage locker every time the wearer goes into the prisoner area, then reholstered coming back out.

Understood............the idea behind my statement was the internals are usually in WAY better shape than the finish.

Same here. I like to buy the police trade-ins and military surplus. Like the man said, they tend to have some worn finish but usually haven't been shot much.

IMHO you should spend the extra money for the unissued because you might as well get something nice, and it's worth the money for the peace of mind to not have to worry about what you'll get.

First of all, take a deep breath. Now again. Better? :)

Don't worry about the layaway, used gun, new gun, unissued. Relax. There's always another gun and no sense getting all anxious over what may or may not be available when you are able to buy.

Second, if you're worried about the government having your fingerprints, don't be. They have (or can easily get) many more hooks in you anyway - social security number, tax history, financial records, passport, etc. (Just don't fall for the mark on the forehead. ) ;)

Regarding the layaway, check with you're local gun shop. They ought to be able to order one for you and hold it till you can pay them off (get your license). They also might find you a good deal on a brand new one w/ night sights and layaway it for you.

Figure they would want at least $100 down on it.

New M&P 40 Compacts aren't all that expensive to begin with. You can always add night sights later on, if need be.

$389 gets you a NIB M&P 40 from CDNN Investments. I bet your local gun shop can match that price or be right near it.

Sorry about the length of this post folks, but I'm responding to quite a few posts in the one post.

Perhaps if you first saved the money to purchase the pistol you could go into the store and buy whichever "tier" suited you best. I am not a advocate of layaway as I would rather pay and go, and not deal with pay and wait.

My question had nothing to do with how I should pay for it. I don't get people on forums who have to comment on how someone else plans to pay for a purchase. I also sometimes use a credit card (do you approve of that or feel the same as layaway). I'm not going to pay loads of interest though, one of credit cards has 18mo on the introductory rate (0%) and still pays cash back. As for this purchase, I have the money for the purchase now. In fact, I plan on buying 2 guns over the next month or two (the other being a new revolver) and I can afford to buy both now (without saving a month or two) if I go on the budget side for each (but not if I get the S&W/Talo 586 L-Comp or 3" S&W 629, then I'll need to save a month or two). Anyhow, the reason for layaway is because I will have a 30day waiting period (maybe more) since I don't yet have my MD license for purchase that went into effect in 2013, not because I can't afford it otherwise (but I have no problem with people using it because they don't have the money otherwise- the poor have a 2nd Amendment right too, and any way more people can get into shooting and a quality gun the better).

A few dollars more or less on a gun purchase isn't that important in life.

There were a few variations on this so I won't quote each but respond to each here. Yeah, I agree. I will go with the $399 unissued version (basically new other than the stamp, about $40-50 less than the same gun new with regular sites, yet this one has the nightsights). If it is gone when I have my license and buy it outright, I'll go with the $349 tier and not one of the cheaper price groups since that group has plenty of customer comments and the vast majority are very happy.

Same here. I like to buy the police trade-ins and military surplus. Like the man said, they tend to have some worn finish but usually haven't been shot much.

Again, quite a few of these, so I'll respond to all at once... I haven't done it yet, but I have read plenty of stories on the internet about how great a deal police trades can be. That is why I was so excited over these. If the unissued guns are gone when I buy, I will go with the $349 price group, expect some holster wear and that maybe some cleanup will be needed, but otherwise expect a solid gun.

There's always another gun and no sense getting all anxious over what may or may not be available when you are able to buy.

Second, if you're worried about the government having your fingerprints, don't be.

On the first, that is true. While the S&W M&P40c has been on my want list for years, I have a lot of compact/mid-sized .40's and sub-compacts on the larger side of sub-compact on my list (CZ P07, CZ P06, SIG P250SC and/or P320SC, SIG P224, SIG P229, SIG 2022, S&W M&P40, S&W M&P40c). I am sure that if these police trade-ins are gone, I'll find a good deal (and possibly a police trade) on at least one of these and worst case the M&P40c could wait and one of these can come first.

On the second, I'm not really paranoid about the government. Heck, they have had my fingerprints 10 times I can recall: as a kid the local PD printed us on a school field trip, I was fingerprinted at least once when I joined the Army for the security clearance needed for my MOS, when I worked in banks most banks did them as part of the background check (I have 3 or 4 sets there), a volunteer job in college did them, when I worked at the psych hospital they did them, when I substitute taught in and just after college, and both teaching jobs did them. My thing about them is it really rubs me the wrong way to have to be fingerprinted to exercise a constitutional right (imagine the uproar, even from liberals, if we needed to be fingerprinted to exercise our right to vote- liberals go nuts just over laws that require us to show ID to prove we who we are to vote).

Regarding the layaway, check with you're local gun shop.
I started that yesterday. For the next few days, I am checking local shops for both the .40 and the revolver to see if I can find a similar deal locally to what Buds has and if they either have layaway or if they'll let me pay for it but wait to pick it up until my license is processed.

Make sure you figure the price of shipping & transfer of the Bud's gun when price shopping local shops.

A $400 gun from Bud's quickly becomes a $450 to $475 gun when shipping and transfer fees are added to it.

Also check on www.Gunbroker.com, I've gotten some real good deals on guns from there. Usually better than anything I can get at Bud's Guns.

Some things are done simply, some we tend to drag out our selves and then there are the nonsense filled rules from meddling politicians, all to complicate our lives. The other day I decided I wanted a specific pistol, called my FFL friend and had him order it, arrived on a Wed., picked it up Thu morning. And was shooting at noon. No layaway, shopping for a few bucks off, no special permit involved (I have a CC permit) and no buyers remorse.

I've had good luck buying police trade-in locally (never bought one off the internet). Usually all it takes is some replaced springs to have a practically new pistol for hundreds less than a new price.

I completely agree with you that you shouldn't have to get fingerprinted to own or carry a gun but your choices are:
1. Play along
2. Get a few million of your buddies to elect some lawmakers who give a rip about the Constitution
3. Get a hundred million of your buddies to lead an armed rebellion and take back the country
:)
