Buying Pistol ammo at "Dicks" on LI

New York has some of the most ridiculous gun laws in all the nation. At any rate, I don't see why you should ever need a license just to buy 9mm ammo. If I were you I would get the guys name and write a letter to Dicks telling them just how rude he was. Most likely others have complained too, perhaps you can get him fired or at least reprimanded for being rude to customers.

Dicks and Dicks

When I was 22 and just received my NY permit in the Binghamton area I repeatedly had the very same experience at Dicks. I didnt have a pistol yet only a 357 rifle. I ended up talking to managers more than once. The csr was an older know it all. He was offended when I would come in and ask for a specific load and he obviously didnt have a clue what i was talking about. I dont think he knew much past pull the trigger while pointing it thataway? Now I am in OH and the csr folks in the lodge go out of their way to help and be polite. I think all the complaints we have all made over the years are finally paying off. I certainly understand the first posters frustration, but if you really want to twist the knife, wait until you discuss it with the manager to vent a little. Next ask to have the csr come up to discuss it with the super with you standing there. The back-pedaling and fifty shades of red are fun to watch and the apology youll get is platinum. Molon Labe!

It's just one guy

There are guys like that everywhere. Some guys like that become cops. Other guys (like him) will settle for any position that lets them feel superior to common folk.

Write a letter or email to Dick's explaining the whole situation.

Oh, and I must say, your explosive temper was probably not helping matters any. If I were him and got called on being incorrect on something by being called an a-hole, I would not have been too friendly to you either. But I would have sucked it up and admitted my mistake too.

I have had the same thing happen at both a Dick’s and Gander Mountain in upstate NY , both places wanted to see the permit and check to see if the caliber was listed. I stopped going to both and now just support my local gun shops for ammunition where I have never had this issue.
Most that I frequent a lot will come close to the big chains price and I do not mind paying a bit more to support the independents. I still will stop into the big chains to see what the gun prices are and have found a few good deals over the years, but am amazed at the gun condition. At my local GM you can handle all the long gun and most in the new rack have so many dings in the wood they look like used guns.

i work at dick's and that would never happen here, and you can walk your own ammo up, stuff like firearms, scopes and barrels gets brought up. they just ask for an id, depending on age and caliber "pistol or rifle" then you leave

Another reason to live in Iowa. $$+ Photo ID= ammo, and have a nice day sir.

There are no Dick's stores up here. If you want bad service you have to go find a Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Frankly, I'd much rather support a small gun store but the fact is that they want DOUBLE the price at Dicks. I mean not even in the ballpark. And this is the same gunstore that wants $100.00 for a FFL transfer. And they wonder why they are losing business to chainstores. I'm sure Muskateer knows what store I am talking about.
Would that be the "Site" to the north of Dick's or the "Outdoors" to the south?

Number one, apparently customer service at this Dicks store is somewhat lacking.

Number two, when the customer curses, that customer looks like an idiot and a hot head and sometimes you can see the point of the hourly employee.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

If you're not happy with the service you get from the person in front of you, you ask for the manager. After that (if need be), you start writing names down and type up a letter including those names (as well as the ENTIRE situation as you saw it) and send it off to corporate.

That is just strange... I live nowhere near NY but I have never even heard of a something requiring you to have a 9mm pistol license in order to purchase 9mm ammo. Maybe the Dicks stores in that area have some SOP or something.

I think this guy sounds like a big anti or something.

That would be the north...:) although the south isn't one wit better.

As a followup: I went to the Dicks in Lake Grove today. Entirely different experience. Went to the counter and asked for some .40's. Counter guy asks for license. I show him license, he takes quick glance and hands it back. That's it. Hands me the ammo, no "assist" up to the front register. No matching guns to ammo.

So we get to chatting, as there is NO one else there. I told him about what happened at the other Dicks. This guy is in his early 60's or so. He tells me that Dicks absolutely does NOT have any policy whatsoever about matching the ammo you are buying to owning that caliber handgun. He laughed at my tale and said he could not believe it. I told him sad but true. He said he has to stop in there to see it for himself. I told him who to ask for. This guy was a gun guy. Apparently the other guy was a cop-wannabe trying to enforce his own policy, as I had guessed.
He also told me that if you don't have a pistol license they still sell it to you, you just have to tell them it's for a rifle. He said it happens all the time, and they don't care they can legally sell it to you. He made the point that people buy .22's by the boatload, thats the same thing. So this guy confirmed what I already new, my run in with Barney Fife was just basically a little man with a bad attitude issue. I'll be speaking to his superiors.

RI has no hassles

on buying ammo.At Walmart they have a register right in the sporting goods section and they will helpfully check out your other purchases there. They do ask if you're over 21 and if it's for a handgun, but if you pay cash you don't need ID(unless you look younger than 21) and buying handguns or long arms requires a 7 business day wait-BUT you need nothing other than a driver's license or state ID for a long gun purchase. For a handgun you need a "blue card"-a one time free card issued after a written safety test.If you can't pass that test, you shouldn't buy a gun.The test is given by the dealer and about 2 weeks later the state sends you a card with no photo and no expiration date. There is no gun registration, and no prohibited weapons or magazines.Armor piercing ammo is illegal to sell in RI-that doesn't affect 5.7x28 ammo, just actual armor piercing rifle ammo.No range in RI will let you shoot that anyway.I don't think much of Dick's service to customers either.
The ammo lady at Walmart is a sweetheart.I don't buy guns from big box stores because they don't carry handguns. In Providence the Walmart doesn't carry ammo.Actually there are no stores in Providence that sell guns or ammo. The mayor hates guns and gunowners, and although he has no authority to control firearms,he seems to have used some kind of pressure for this situation.
The Governor won't sign any gun control laws-period.the state legislature is almost entirely Democrat(the Gov is republican),but they have some of the most pro-gun Dems in the country in that body.Go figure:confused:.

the wal mart near me said one friend of mine couldnt buy .22, its psitol ammo, another was told the same thing....for .300 winchester magnum.....

I'm pretty sure I was in a WalMart (Middle Island?) earlier this year that does have pistol ammo, but the prices weren't that great. They did have the .22 LR Federal ValPak for $13.47 plus tax.

ViperJon,

I know which guy gave you a hard time, but I've never dealt with him. Usually there's a M/W/early 20's with straight black hair working in the Lodge. He's a gun guy and gives very candid opinions on their stock, good or bad. He's a pleasure to buy from. He does have to walk the ammo up to the front checkout. He told me it is because they've had people steal the ammo by walking out instead of paying for it. I don't remember his words exactly, but I think he was not BS'ing me.

He also said that when you buy a case their computer is not set up to scan the barcode on the case box and he has to help the register people by cutting the case open, scanning one ammo box and then multiplying by the number of boxes in the case. He said that especially when the ammo is on sale that the register people screw it up. I personally witnessed that happen (register person screwing up the checkout so the buyer did not get the sale price, and a whole big to do to set it right.

About two weeks ago there was a M/B/early 20's working in the Lodge with him who also knew his gun stuff. Maybe there is hope after all.

Just in general, Dick's seems to be 85-90% clothing anyway. The actual sporting equipment is almost like an afterthought. It's also hard to find prices on a lot of their regular items, and when they're on sale it seems like they try to keep it a secret. Dick's is a very disappointing enterprise, especially after reading above about how Dick's got started in Binghamton. I'll bet Dick Stack is turning over in the grave.

Only read the first post in this thread but that was enough. Hate to stereotype but that's the same mentality I've fiund in all my many trips to LI. Not surprised in the least as to what occurred and what was said (by either party actually)
Only place I've had good service without any attitude what-so-ever was a small shop my father-in-law frequesnted someplace around Garden City. they weren't bad towards me but that changed ten-fold when they realized where I was from. Offered up great service and free range of the shop after that. I think they closed though soon after.

Now I just explain that the ammo is for my "Marlin Camp Nine" or my "Thompson Encore .357 magnum" or the really nice ".45ACP Uzi carbine".

Yep, thats what I do when asked the "is it for a pistol" question and I have a unrestricted NYS pistol permit! The only time I ever get asked anything is at Dicks, Gander, or wallymart. I buy 90% of my ammo via the internet or gun shows but sometimes local box stores have sale prices that are hard to beat.

Steveracer, you might want to add .40S&W Keltec Sub2K to your list of rifles;)

bought some of that 9mm sale ammo last week at Dick's in Bee Cave TX ... walked it to the checkout stand myownself ... must be a local rule or the jerk behind the counter made it up because he didn't like you ...
