buying new gun from gun shop

Not that you are losing a ton of money given the current prime rate and typical savings account interest rates.

BUT, it would be far more effective to save the money in YOUR account until you have the full amount rather than giving them an interest free loan while you're saving for the pistol. -Your specific circumstances may make this impractical, if so, you can ignore this advice....after all, it is free.

If there were a specific pistol you had your eye on and they had it sitting on the shelf waiting for you, I'd be less critical.

Please reconsider your layaway decision. They really aren't laying anything away for you.

Well when I first gave them money towards a gun I wasn't exactly sure what gun I wanted, and while I was saving money in the open account I was looking at the different guns they would get in. I then decided to buy new and all they require is 20% of the total price of the gun before they order it. I've only paid half so far and im not very good at saving for things I want as opposed to things I actually need so that's why I did the open account.

I haven't bought anything from a LGS since last summer when I got my oldest a Marlin 795 and that was because of the mail in rebate.

Local shops get their stuff from Davidson's, Century, Lipsey's, SOG, and even some of the more consumer based outfits like CDNN. Think about it - pick up S&W 5906s @ 299 or less and sell 'em for $550 - which is a "normal" price for those things in shops.

Local shops can't compete with online unless they themselves have some type of online presence. The days of the small mom & pop shops are numbered and it doesn't have anything to do with the goods being imported from overseas.

I'm a big fan of the local gun shop. Absoloutly true that you can save some scratch buying on line. Personally I enjoy the search... the hunt for the gun as much as the purchase, and possesion. With local gun shops I'm able to look at, hold, fondle, dry fire, and otherwise drool over my choices. I also have the chance to look at other choices and options. I've met folks who have become true and lasting friends while perusing one shop or another. After being a regular customer at some stores I've been able to get better deals, and considerations.

I probably buy more often than most people... maybe thats a big part of my love of gun shops. I also like used guns. While most people want a new gun I like em seasoned. I find awsome deals, and rare finds by frequenting gun shops.

Gun's are my hobby and distraction from the trials and tribulations of every day life. So gun stores are an oasis for me.
