buying new gun from gun shop

I was wondering if anyone knew where gun shops order new guns from for customers. Im looking at ordering a new gun from my local gun shop, and I have an open layaway plan where I put money in an open account and when I get close to paying the total price of the gun, they order it. They told me the gun would be $600 the first time I was in there. I just went in last week and told them to go ahead and order the gun and they said the gun is $625 and that he would wait till he found it cheaper to order it. I was just curious where they ordered guns from because I found the same gun new online for $530 with free shipping and I would just have to pay the transfer fee which is still cheaper than $600 total.

they get them from all sorts of places mainly distributors, and some brands straight from the Factory ?? yeah you can look around online and other gun shops and always find what you want cheaper, I went out today and looked and wow the prices are crazy high... I got my Gen4 glock 23 for $475 new and these places want anywhere from $550 to over $600 for some glocks and some were not even Gen4's

Im sure they wont let me take my money out of the open account and go the cheaper route since they wont make any money that way...oh well guess ill know for next time.

I use Bud's Guns http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php as a reference for prices before I buy from a LGS. I may not get it at the same price as Bud's, but I can tell if they are way overpriced. You can also go the the websites of many manufacturers to see what the MSRP is, and see if the LGS is asking full, or in some cases, over the full price.

When my father had an FFL he ordered from Jerry's Sports Center. I assume Jerry's is still in business, I know a buddy of mine with an FFL used to order from them too, I don't know if he still does. For older stuff he has a variety of sources including gun broker. My friend doesn't keep any inventory, but I can order just about anything I want from him. Unfortunately he won't deal in handguns, he says NY state too much of a hassle with the permit/coupon system.

I always thought that when I saw a sign up that said "Authorized Dealer", it meant the manufacturer distributed directly to them.

That doesn't preclude them from purchasing from a distributor if there is better pricing, and usually manufacturers give pricing discounts by volume, so it can happen that a gun shop is an authorized dealer but they don't move enough product to get really good pricing direct from the manufacturer, whereas a big distributer does...

My favorite LGS is an authorized dealer for a lot of the major names, and he orders directly from them. I know he also orders from various distributors when I want something that he isn't an authorized dealer for, and I don't think he's restricted to buying only from the factory if he needs to get something more quickly.
Perhaps someone with a FFL can chime in here?

That isn't a "layaway" plan. If they don't even order the gun until you've deposited the full amount its called a savings account. :D

Why can you not save your $$$ in your own bank account? Your giving the gun store an interest free loan.

Rarely do i prurchase a new gun from a local dealer..taxes 10% so i useally get new guns from Buds ,Jet guns ..or a few from Gunbroker...

Used guns ..some times i find deals at LGS's

I've got a local dealer that gives me good prices. He doesn't keep a lot in stock but will order. He's a few dollars higher than Buds but by the time you add FFL fees and shipping the LGS is cheaper.

Factoring in "good will" never hurts. Whether we like it or not, an LGS is necessary to accept delivery of guns we order on the net. Folks who never buy anything from the shop and are always bragging that they can get better prices on the net can easily find that the local shop refuses to hand out license copies. Sure, they make some money on transfer fees, but they have no requirement to do so (no, BATFE won't force your LGS to play your game) and they just might forego that for a guy who has stood in the shop and told forty customers that the place overcharges and to buy from XXX shop on the web.

To the OP,

Your LGS sucks! Also, why would you pay money on a layaway for an item that's not even in the store? You're just giving him a bunch of your money for nothing. Get your money back and do business with a better place.

Gun stores in this area

The FFL guy I use has a small shop, I have purchased a couple guns from his place simple because I like the guy and he is a nice person and the prices are not too much, but I also purchased three of the actual guns I have wanted from Buds online because every store and their mother in my town wanted at least $100-$250 more for each gun I bought. Also he is cool because everytime I buy a gun from him he doesn't charge me for a transfer from Buds to recieve and process just the license fee. Nice guy, but I would say 90% of time the online price is always better than the store due to pure economics, you are paying for the overhead.

Dogtown's right. That's more like a Hide-It-From-Your-Wife account.

But like James has pointed out, there is a value to using a LGS. If there's not a significant savings buying online, you're often better off buying locally IMO.

I think that's called theft

I'm sure they will.

For them to keep your money is wrong. I am very sure it is also illegal and, if not the crime of theft, at least breach of contract.

Since they changed the price on you, that proves you did not have an enforceable contract. (They might have a leg to stand of if they offer to honor the original price, but that might have to be decided in civil court if you want to push it.)

Bottom line is that since they have not performed under the original terms of the contract, and have given you nothing, they are no longer entitled to enforce the contract (unless you consent) and you are entitled to a full refund. All you have to do is ask. You may have to ask emphatically, and with the threat of a lawsuit, but contract law is pretty clear, all you SHOULD have to do is ask.

I am not a lawyer, but I have taken a couple of classes in business law. For any contract to be enforceable, consideration must be given. You have given, they have not. Therefore, they have no enforceable rights under the contract. You do.

Now, what do they have in writing that might have given any of those rights away? The writing may be void, but best to be sure before you go making any threats that would burn bridges.

You gave them money, you are entitled to the specified gun at the specified price. They gave you nothing. They are entitled to nothing.

Where did this soapbox come from and why am I standing on it, shouting?

Good Luck.
