It kind of sounds like you are looking for the perfect CCW gun since reliability and low maintenance are big considerations with choosing one. Most of us here have been searching for the same thing for a long time. (Of course that gives us an excuse to keep buying guns). I don't want to carry a gun that has to be wiped down every night or that is so pretty that every scratch gives you the same feeling as the first dent on a new car. You may want a gun that you can think of as a tool instead of a work of art. Good luck with that idea on your first gun
. If you carry it a lot, you'll really start to notice size and weight. I have used a SIG P232 with stainless slide and blue aluminum frame, a Kahr P9 (stainless and polymer), a Kimber stainless aluminum compact and any number of Glocks with no complaints. For a one and only, (which is a good way to go for a CCW gun by the way), a Glock 19 might be hard to beat. They are already ugly so a few scratches will just give it character. They're practically rustproof so you don't have to baby them. They're relatively light although a little thick. They're a blast to shoot and you can still easily find high capacity magazines and you know you're going to want at least one. However if you are ever going to carry by just sticking it in your waistband (which I predict you will do) you probably want to carry with an empty chamber since they fire very easily. If you are going to carry a lot by sticking it in your waistband (which is what I find myself doing more and more), you might want to try something with a safety like Kimber stainless aluminum compact or stainless Ultra Carry. That's my .02 worth.
