Bush VP to be CHENEY, who has a pro-gun record!

From ssngltn@aol.com on the WA-CCW list:

"By the way, CNN just announced that Cheney voted "pro-gun" when he was in Congress. They listed three or four issues that he voted against (including a ban on "cop killer" bullets) and he was one of only four who voted against a waiting period for gun purchases. That, and his expertise as former Sec'y of Defense during the Gulf War makes him a darn good pick, IMO. Hope he's the one."

Confirmation on his record would be good. This poster is a reliable individual.

The WashPost is confirming this pick: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35009-2000Jul24.html

If this is the case, Cheney would be a better pick than Keyes. Not on pure ideology: Bush is seen as weak on foreign policy, Cheney can help fill in that gap that Keyes just couldn't, at least in the public mindset. Yes, Bush/Keyes would be better than Bush/Cheney but Bush/Cheney has a better shot.

Compared to the other options, Cheney seems OK. Can anyone confirm his record?

Jim

WRITE IN KEYES FOR VP!!!!

(though, Cheney will be ok...)

"[Even if there would be] few tears shed if and when the Second Amendment is held to guarantee nothing more than the state National Guard, this would simply show that the Founders were right when they feared that some future generation might wish to abandon liberties that they considered essential, and so sought to protect those liberties in a Bill of Rights. We may tolerate the abridgement of property rights and the elimination of a right to bear arms; but we should not pretend that these are not reductions of rights." -- Justice Scalia 1998

Keyes on the Supremes? Hmmm...I like the sound of that! Is he a lawyer, at least?

Actually, my first choice would be Yale law professor Akhil Reed Amar. He has the scholarship and rep to be taken seriously, and he's absolutely 100% behind the 2nd being an individual right AND incorporated into the states via the 14th. Given both his beliefs and his credibility, ya, he's the ultimate.

Oh God...even better: HALBROOK! Oh HELL ya. And remember, this isn't "either/or" - Bush will have up to four picks... :D. Amar being "minority", he's a very likely first choice though.

Yep. Vote Bush :).

Jim

Jim:

You better read up on Akhil Reed Amar a little more. Although he believes in the individual right, he also believes that there is no constitutional question for gun registration, bans on assault weapons.... you known common sense gun controls.

The debate is not about guns,
but rather who has the ultimate power to rule,
the People or Government.
RKBA!

That's right, Bookie; Akil's of the increasingly popular school of thought among liberals which admits that the 2nd guarantees an individual right, but then goes on to define that right so narrowly as to render it meaningless. As long as someone, somewhere, is permitted to own some sort of gun... goes their thinking.

Didn't he also write a law review article claiming that the purpose of the 2nd amendment was to enable the white population to more effectively hunt down escaped slaves?

I'm glad to hear that Cheney is pro-gun, (Though to many in the media that just means that he's not fanticly anti-gun.) as I've had trouble tracking down his views on the subject, and was begining to wonder.

Now wait: is it possible you're mixing up Lawrence Tribe with Amar?

The way he phrases his opinions in "The Bill Of Rights", Amar at the very least would be in favor of CCW. Or he could be fairly easily convinced. He makes the case in this book that the intent behind the 14th was to to transfer the emphasis on the 2nd to a "personal-centric" right to bear arms for personal defense against criminal, not state, attack. And he makes a damned good point. He also calls the lack of emphasis on the 2nd and the Supreme Court's seeming unwillingness to deal with the post-14th implications "unfortunate".

That's not a grabber talkin', no way in hell.

Jim

All I can say is that the leash of the dog that the media is, has been slipped. I think that with this news the fireworks should start. The Clinton protection/power grubbing machine now has a whole target.

On the other hand, he seems like a good pick.

Jim: Well, when it comes to the slave hunting bit, it turns out I DID have Akhil confused with the aptly named Carl T. Bogus.

I missed the first few minutes of "Crossfire" last night, but when I tuned in, Bill Press was ranting about Cheney being a stooge of the NRA. Certainly that doesn't mean he's 100% pro RKBA, but it's a heck of a lot better than "you don't need an AK47" Liddy Dole.

Had CNN on the tube today checkin' out the latest updates. As I was walking in the room I saw some talking head on there whining about Cheney, saying "He's more NRA than the NRA is itself!"
And "he's too far to the right".

Others were saying that Bush and Cheney want to take the Country back to where it was during the Reagan Administration.

Yes, the future is looking bright!

I was watching the local news here in Houston, and they were interviewing a local Democratic party spokesperson about Cheney. She was bashing him about his previous voting record. She even mentioned that he was against the banning of "plastic guns that can get past airport security" which the NRA even supported. What gun(s) is/are she speaking of? Don't tell me she's referring to Glocks.

Incursion: Associated Press ran a story on Cheney's views, which Drudge had a link to. I'm sure it's the source of her rant. Here's the story: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/aponline/20000724/aponline204523_000.htm

" Cheney Conservative in Values

WASHINGTON –– A look at where Dick Cheney has stood on the issues, based primarily on his voting record when he was a congressman from Wyoming from 1978 to 1989 and his tenure as secretary of defense from 1989 to 1993:

ABORTION:

Opposes abortion rights and has voted against federal funding of abortions even in cases of rape, incest or when a woman's life is in danger. But Cheney has said there must be room in the GOP for contrary views on abortion.

GUN CONTROL:

Opposed gun control measures while in Congress and opposed bans on imports of plastic guns that could be smuggled past metal detectors and armor piercing bullets.

ENVIRONMENT:

Opposed funding for the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. Cheney voted against spending more on "Superfund" environmental cleanups and supported oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But he opposed gas and oil leasing in Wyoming wilderness areas and wanted to designate 650,000 additional acres in Wyoming as wilderness areas.

MILITARY:

Was a staunch supporter of a strong defense and backed President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, known as "Star Wars," the deployment of the MX missile, production of new chemical weapons and military aid to the Nicaraguan contras.

But, as secretary of defense during the Bush administration, he oversaw defense budget cuts that he described as "very, very painful," proposed halting production of the Marine Corp's Osprey aircraft and ordered cutbacks in other military hardware programs.

DEATH PENALTY:

Has supported capital punishment.

SOCIAL SECURITY:

Favored raising the Social Security retirement age from 65 to 67 .

CIVIL RIGHTS:

Opposed busing to achieve racial desegregation in public schools and the Equal Rights Amendment and supported prayer in public schools.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE:

Opposed limiting contributions by political action committees.

MEDICARE:

Opposed coverage of long-term home care for the chronically ill under Medicare and voted against a measure that would have shielded Medicare beneficiaries from bills for catastrophic illnesses and provided prescription drug coverage under Medicare.

I've already complained to the AP, pointing out that Handgun Control Inc. press releases are not trustworthy reference materials. No response yet, though. Maybe you'd like to complain, too?

Yep, Incursion. She's referring to the infamous Glock "plastic pistol act". Too bad none of our elected officials tried to x-ray one of those evil plastic pistols before making fools of themselves.

The media was blatantly telling us how Chaney had made a lot of "bad" votes in Congress.

Okay, they're bolshieviks and not voting for gun control makes you bad. But they were ridiculing him for voting for Star Wars - despite the fact that it was a clever ruse that helped price the soviets out of the arms race.

They're either stoopid, or side with the commies.

Battler.

Yes, she means Glocks!!!!
That issue was settled LONG ago, even to the ATF's satisfaction.

Just wait till Dick starts firing back!!! He's been in the thick of it before!!! :)

Smart move on Bush's part. He gets a lot more NRA supporter votes this way, while Cheney's position gains us nothing.

Bright side:
Bush does very little for 8 years and Cheney takes over. Cross your fingers, group!
Rich

I agree, Rich. Right now, the roles are reversed. Cheney should be the noiminee for president, while Bush might be OK for VP. I don't trust Little George. Of course, it has nothing to do with the Insider issue, going back to Prescott Bush.
